Obviously, this is the V1!
The V2 does not come with a "Designed by Rupert Neve" transformer.
Instead, it comes with a transformer that looks like a "Designed by Rupert Neve" transformer with the "Designed by Rupert Neve" sticker peeled off.
[Does rough back of virtual envelope calculation ...] Approximately 274 manufacturers. Anything labelled or advertised as "Echoplex," "EP," (e.g Dunlop, Catalinbread, Very Good Amp Co.), tape delay emulators that also have a pre-amp circuit (various EP and Roland emulators), Templo Devices makes one based on an Akai tape deck (I think, perhaps another venerable Japanese make) as well as Strymon and many, many others. Probably second only to Klon as a model for emulators.
And ironically the Jive is apparently just a clone of the ZVex Super Hard-on but with optional added clipping diodes, no circuit resemblance whatsoever to the preamp of the reel to reel that they say “inspired” it.Yeah. They're lucky no-one else makes a decent reel-to-reel preamp simulator. Oh, wait ...
Okay, touché.
BTW, if you're looking for that one thing most people dug about the Jive, that barely there, riding on the edge of breakup thing. Simply get a Wessex instead!
They are around and seem to fly under the radar with second hand prices lower than a new Jive (non bass version) costs.
I'd say the Jive is an improvement on the SHO, because it features a gain and master knob, plus it does not come in that nice looking but totally impractical pedal layout.
I have not been aware of this pedal. I tried to google it and came accross Bogner Wessex. Is it the one you were speaking of?
I was mostly just making a comment on how the whole “reel to reel preamp” thing was just marketing BS in this case.
They must have read your review here in the States. Can’t find one for under $200.
Damn it! I planned to snag up all the pedals before the hype started ;-)
...but we'll see. I can play the Bogner on Sunday in a tight band context to see what it does there, and then there is the new exciting mystery pedal coming in that might upset a lot of my rig.
Did you try the V2 (which is actually available new in NZ) and compare the transformers? It seems that you expect them to be identical. Also, I may have missed it, but did you make any specific assessment of the EQ arrangements?
I did some more research on the topic and I'm not sure anymore. I've read claims that there has been a legal issue between Bogner and Neve and as a result, the Neve name was removed and the circuits have been moved to smaller enclosures.
I've also read that the pedals have been altered, with the V2 using a smaller transformer. I was not able to google a gut shot of a V2 Wessex, though.
I have a V2 coming in later today. I’ll try to shoot the insides properly.
I couldn’t find any demos of either version on bass (or synth), but comparing it on guitar with the Hudson Broadcast, I think I still prefer the Hudson (specifically the 24V, 3-channel model). What am I missing?
