My DIY Pedalboard

Because this is an extension to my existing board, I needed to build a structure that could attach to the existing end panel. I like to use routed Dado joins as they are particularly good with marine Ply. I've used a Rabbet join in one section and all the rest are dado. The big hole was first drilled out and then I used my Jigsaw. If I was going to build an entirely new carcass, I would have run this right across. If this proves unreliable, I may well just build a whole new board. It's the difference between a few afternoons of work and about 3 whole days.
 
I brought it back into the house from my garage / workshop and re-attached the top. I cut the new right hand top plate to size and rounded off the edges. It'll be a few days before the new hinge arrives, so at the moment it's not fixed. I started to load up the board and started to re-wire everything back up. First up was attaching all of the power feeds. The Strymon Zuma R300 is in the same place as before. Next was the midi cables. They are the largest connectors and they need early plumbing.
I thought I'd take the opportunity to bypass the ES-5's looper / switcher option and attach each pedal directly to the next. Wow....what a lot of cables I have left over. I think there was nearly a pound of cable weight before. It's a lot lighter and hardly any cables at all. The wiring mess under the hood is really clear. I've not cabled in the USB cables yet, that adds a lot to the mess.
So how does it sound? Really nice, noticeably brighter due and a lot louder. Now that the Boss ES-5 isn't in the signal path anymore, I loose the input and output buffers and that's very noticeable. My dirt sounds a bit feral and unfamiliar and it'll take we a while to re-adjust my patches. The pickups from my bass are particularly hot and without the buffer, they are shredding the dirt! Everything is sounding a lot brighter too. I guessing that's due to the huge reduction in signal path cabling. I was literally running a 60cm patch into each pedal from the ES-5 and then back again. That's a patch length of 1.2m per pedal!
Amazingly, I can actually see my Neuro Hub and Midi Merge box and it's looking so clear under the hood.
Patch / midi wise, everything is a bit of mess. Not that I don't have power over my loops per patch, each patch now needs midi on/off commands adding for every pedal on every patch. That's going to take a lot of time! But it needs to be done if I am going to migrate over to a Morningstar MC-6 in a few months. I'll want to integrate my Source Audio Atlas compressor first.

It's been an interesting midi journey. Removing the loop / switch function of my Boss ES-5 has highlighted a number of facts. It's reduced my cabling and signal path length substantially. However, I loose the ES-5's buffer and has introduced a random response to lot of my patches, especially where dirt is concerned. Ironically, dirt is heavily influenced by changes in impedance. This is true with digital or analogue dirt and removing my buffer has literally made any patch with dirt sound like I'm playing a totally different bass. It sounds different and reacts differently. Without my buffers, it sounds like I'm overwhelming my dirt.

Another interesting fact is that this journey highlights certain qualities and deficiencies in different brand's Midi implementation and control. My EHX Hog 2 is quite frustrating from a Midi perspective. It's great that it is midi compliant but compared to say any Source Audio product, it's shockingly immature and limited. With Source Audio, I can map any available feature to a midi CC via a midi map in the desktop interface. My favs are setting CC #0 to toggle enable / bypass. If I send a value to this CC I can dictate what state, either enable or bypass. If I take out the value, it simply switches state. Very easy and useful. Another great CC is that I always set midi CC#15 to expression and CC#103 to patch load engaged and CC#104 to patch load bypassed. This allows me a common set of CC numbers across my pedals and reduces the need for paper notes. If I send CC104 value 12 to my C4, it calls up patch 12 but in a by passed state. A similar situation with my Eventide H9's, a very comprehensive and customisable list of options.
With the EXH hog2, if I call up a midi PC to change patch, it's always engaged. I have to send a separate Midi CC to set the pedal to bypass. This CC number is pre-set and can't be re-mapped, I have to remember CC# 85 for my EHX Hog 2. Having the external foot control for my Hog2 really helped me see what patch I'm actually calling up. it's an essential piece of kit with the Hog2. There's no desktop editor for the Hog2 with again, is irritating. It's a great pedal / panel and has a lot of unique features and sounds.

Loosing the Looper / Switcher has made patch changing far more complex. Previously, each patch on my ES-5 would only send the difference between patches. I always started on patch 1 and I would engage / bypass pedals via the loop commands. Usually all the loops are off as default so I just need to enable which loops I need for this patch. If I'm not using my delay pedal for several patches, I simply don't activate that loop and I don't need to send any commands to that pedal. So unused pedals don't need any further midi commands. I can focus on jus the used / engaged pedals. As a result, some of my patches had very few midi commands and a few midi assigns (the boss allows re-mapping of buttons for per-patch Secondary functions). Taking out the looper switcher puts a lot more over head on programming each pedal for each patch. There is substantially more pedal pre-set carry over from patch to patch than I got using the looper / switcher functions. I generally need to send a Midi command to each pedal regardless if I'm using it or not. It's a lot easier and lighter to program an ES-5 with a looper /switcher than say a MC-6 which is purely a Midi controller. Especially, if you have a big board. I guess that's why the ES-5 only has 8 Midi commands per patch vs the MC-6's 16. I have only one patch that uses all 8 Midi commands on my ES-5.

I'm finding that I'm now relying a lot more on the Source Audio Scenes on my Neuro Hub to map common patch / pedal configurations for my Source Audio ecology. I have a very common set of Modulation / Dirt / Octave patches and it's great to be able to pre-stage with a single midi PC command. I can literally configure 5 pedals in on Midi PC command. I just need to map my most commonly used patches with those 5 pedals and save them to a dedicated Scene.

Another positive in migrating to a Morningstar MC-6 is the reduced weight. When I specced this board back in 2017, I really wanted a Boss ES-8. But it's a really heavy and very physically large device. There weren't many uses of the ES-5 back then, the ES-8 was all the rage. It's 9 loops (including the Volume loop) and 2 of those loops are stereo. but the ES-5 was a lot smaller and lighter in comparison. But it's still 1.2kg and physically takes up 4 pedal spaces. That's not including the space at the back for the cabling jacks. A MC-6 is only 550g, that's nearly 1/3 weight difference and it only takes up the space of 2 pedals. It only needs 2 midi cables and a power jack. So I'm saving on cabling / patch weight too. Physically it's a much simpler implementation, although I do loose the buffers.

I’m surprised you didn’t go with an mc8 with all those pedals? And don’t miss out on program a switch to go between page 1 and 2 on the mc6 for more switches.

The unloaded carcass is just over 1kg, so not too bad. Loaded...I've not weighed it yet , but probably in the 3-5 Kgs. I can certainly load out from my car with a bass case in on hand and pedalboard in the other. However, making it over the last 2-3 days has yes put a strain on my body. I'm an IT engineer...I sit all day behind a desk!

I've thought hard about an MC-8 vs MC-6. I think the MC-6 will do me fine, the Source Audio Neuro hub Scenes provide me with patch control across 5 connected SA pedals for a singe Midi PC send. It really cuts down on Midi messaging. Those 5 pedals tend to be my most used pedals. I have only about 35patches on my ES-5, of those I only use about 10-15 regularly. So for example, my Church P&W gigs, I have only 2 patches that I need. A C maj / G maj PAD patch and a regular bass play patch. The bass play patch has a Compressor on my Ultrawave (with optional grit), and EQ2 Curve and volume swell patch, a specific modulation that I like in that context and a C4 trem patch. Everything I need for that situation and I enable / bypass the pedals I need within that patch. The PAD patch is a set of patches and pedals that is 6 pedals with specific presets that combine to make the PAD sound. So all 6 pedals, either engaged / bypass and a button press to toggle either C or G maj harmoniser. I think I have an crystals option too. Literally 6 midi commands, two 2ndary function button presses.

Yes I'll probably experiment with the three button expansion for the MC-6. I just don't want my Midi controller taking up as much space as my ES-5 does. Otherwise there is no incentive for me to invest in swapping out gear that essentially does the same and offers zero benefit.

This is truly a work of functional art. I am in the early stages of a pedalboard build myself, after getting frustrated with the limitations of the Holeyboard system. This is definitely inspiring me to think differently about it, including dusting off my Hog2 instead of my Pog2.

Question, what are you using as a case for this, if anything? My current challenge is keeping the build I am working on trim, while also allowing enough bulk to attach lift off hinges and latches.

I've had a bit of a re-organise of my first 5 pedal order. I'm no longer using the loop / switcher function of my Boss ES-5, each pedal is wired in place and the order can only be changed by un-velcro-ing them, lifting and re-sticking them down. So now pedal order is more critical than before. Previously, if I wanted to change a pedal order, i could easily edit them per patch.
So now my signal path is C4 > Hog2 > Ultrawave > Spectrum > Aftershock. All of these are mono feeds. Mono from the Aftershock > H9 (Stereo) > Lunar > Nemesis > EQ2 >H9(2). My signal path out of my primary H9 is stereo.
I've put my Ultrawave before my Spectrum and my Aftershock after my Spectrum. If I want post filter dirt, I use my Aftershock and if I want pre filter dirt or compression I use my Ultrawave. My C4 is my main octave / synth pedal, sometimes a trem. So my compressor (Ultrawave) is after my Octavers (C4 and hog2).
When my Atlas arrives, I'm thinking of splitting it's channels and running one channel before my octavers and one after, using the Atlas' patching / midi to toggle between them. Or I keep it simple and place it after my Hog2 / C4 combo.

With my recent pedal board expansion, I have a lot of spare room under the hood. I easily squeezed in my Aftershock in the "Undercroft". The patch cabling from the Spectrum to the H9 was the same length. So the only addition distance is the short patch out from the Aftershock to the H9.
The new knobs arrived from Amazon...and I felt like my C4 needed black knobs too.

Now that I have re-created my favourite three Aftershock patches on my Ultrawave, it's time to start thinking about removing it from my board. It's not something I ever thought would happen. It's the longest serving pedal on my board and it's an excellent pedal. However, the Ultrawave is a lot more sophisticated and there's little point in having them both on there. I'm also thinking of flipping my Nemesis for a Collider. As much as id love a Ventris, I think that a Collider will suit my needs and board space better. I'm also keen to try the Source Audio True Spring. Whilst this is usually considered to be a guitar pedal, the on board tremolo and spring verbs could be quite interesting my ambient aspirations.
The Atlas is the best compressor I've ever used. It's really changed how I approach compression and I have 6 great patches set up for it. Like my Spectrum, I'm keeping this pedal's control quite simple. This pedal isn't currently controlled via midi, I'm using as-is with it's 4 knobs (7 controls) and six patches. It's very versatile and covers a lot of ground.

I think I've made my decision in terms of adding a Source Audio Reverb to my board. I've been toying with adding a Ventris for some time. However, it creates a bit of space problem on my top row of effects. I really like the options on the Ventris. However, I could consolidate a Ventris and nemesis space and get a Collider instead. Although I would get less delay options, I mostly use the delays that are in the Collider. The Diffuse engine on the Nemesis could easily be replaced with one of the Reverb settings on the Collider. I can flip my Aftershock and Nemesis and pretty much bad a mint Collider on Ebay (new they are unobtanium at the moment). So it's literally zero cost too. I could buy a Ventris S/H and keep my Nemesis. This would offer me more Verbs and there's that sweet hidden Tremolo on the Ventris too. I think, I'll go for the Collider. If it doesn't work out I'll swap it for a Ventris and get another Nemesis later.
 
I've finally done it...I've taken the Aftershock off my board. It feels a bit weird, it's a pedal that is superb. It's just made superfluous by my Ultrawave. It frees up one of my Hub connectors, which will go to my Atlas Compressor. I don't intend to use it a lot via midi, however it's nice to have options. I've had a few let down with buying a Collider S/H, and I found a good price on a new one. So I bought it and it's on it's way to me this week. I'll keep my Nemesis on my board for a bit longer, so I can match patches on the Collider and make sure this is what I want. The Collider's verbs are a lot more cut down in terms of controls. I generally loose room size except for the hall verb. I might miss the Mod verb and the superb five trem models. However, I have my fantastic Eventide H9's to play with and they have great trems too. I think the Collider will do me fine most of the time.
