I've never had an E that rang with the same zing as the uppers, however I have had a couple bad E strings fairly recent. I don't want to mention the brand.

First, I would check witness points on the bridge and nut.I live Daddario nyxl strjnvs...but...the E strings die too quickly compared to other brands. Im currently having this same issue with my p bass. Changed E to a new nyxl, swapped pickups, adjusted everything possible l, no significant change. Going to try a new brand of string. Fingers crossed
