My ex-wife bought me a bass and my freedom!!!

Interesting fact: young American men are getting married fewer and fewer. The common argument that the risk of marriage and all that can be taken away is just not worth the legal commitment.

Young women are getting frustrated because the dating pool has been dwindling, as that young men just aren't interested in investing in such a risk.

I say good for them, it's a smart move.

Source: I work for a youth and young adult outreach program for the city. I spend all day with all sorts of people with amazing/unreal stories to share.

Kinda sad. That's like not buying the bass you really love beacuse it has a poor resale value.

Well, sorta like that....

...OK, not really.

Interesting to me are those people who see a thread about a recent divorce, and can't not brag about how long you've been happily married. Happily. It smells like denial. "Well I've been married for X years, and I'm happy! See, she lets me own 11 basses. I'm really happy. Happy, I say! HAPPY!"

Of course, I'm just saying it seems that way. Obviously, I'm misreading this. Obviously.

(Tee hee, "she lets me")

My ex-wife wouldn't let me listen to music without headphones in the house, much less play my bass. My high school present to myself sat in a closet for 7 years. I sold everything else music related, but couldn't part with the bass. Yes, things were different before we were married and moved in with each other.

Needless to say "ex" is the key word above.

I got back into music as a way to deal with the divorce - and the guilt related to two very young girls being dragged through it. Music seemed like a positive way to deal with stress and being a good role model as opposed to drinking or any other a-holic.

Fast forward five years, and wife number two has to encouraged me build a music area in the basement, collect way too much stuff, join two bands and a songwriting club, etc. This one will go to concerts even if she has no interest in the band. It's probably not surprising that I have no problem whatsoever supporting her interests.

Same wife for 40 years.
45 years if you count going out together in high school...and a bit.
Two successful sons in their 30's.
Many guitars, many amps, three basses, piano, cars, HO trains, guns, cameras.
Flew all my adult life until retirement.
Just parted with a band because I had too much music on the go. Six days a week on average.

Sometimes you just get lucky.

Yet, all this and no slot car set.

Love it. On my second marriage. Will be 15 years this week, 22 together. Our love of music is what brought us together. No, she wasn’t the singer in the band lol althougsome years later we had a really awesome acoustic duo. Performed over 300 shows in the 5 year run before relocating back to Georgia. Now grandchildren are here passion. This past Xmas she bought me a beautuful MusicMan HH. I’m very lucky!

Oh, one of the last conversations with my ex was her telling me she didn’t ever want to discuss music with me again. Shocking that we didn’t make it!

It is never nice when a relationship breaks down & things get bitter, and unfortunately young children are caught in the crossfire sometimes to young to understand what's going on.
When my Ex & I parted all I got was a bag of clothes and my bass guitar (1964 Hofner Violin bass), she got everything else & I became a part time Dad not always nice. 23 years later with the new wife, house, kids, pets etc I still have the '64 Hofner violin bass & 4 other basses and a great relationship with my first daughter who is now 28.

Well, I guess she didn’t buy me my freedom, I kind of did that. And yes, I had to give her a lot of money, but now I can buy whatever the hell I want!

Plus, around here, you have to be divorced at least once to play in a dad band...so I have that going for me.
Obviously she's not the brightest cookie of the bunch!! you probably had your reasons for the the devorce..
or maybe not!
