My experience going to custom IEMs

Yep, and my artistic skills are pretty poor, but if you give it time and work out a drawing you like you'll be super attached and proud of it.

Definitely makes sense. How big was the drawing you did for them? Did you just scan it in to PDF or did you send them an original copy?

Hey man I am about to pull the trigger with 1964...currently I am primarily doing FOH duties and playing bass on the side, I am leaning towards the V6's because I would hate to leave anything on the table in terms of quality. After listening to the V6's would you be happy using them playing bass?
Hey Vision, it wasn't very big, probably 3 inches tall by 1 or so wide. I scanned in the image and sent it to them that way.
and dmilt, I would definitely be happy with the V6's! The quads had more character in the bass area, but the V6's had more clarity overall and balanced more. I think they would've been my choice if I was doing more than just playing bass.

I want to roll a couple cables like this for a bandmate who has been reluctant to go for wireless IEMs. Does anyone have a recommendation for a specific type of heat shrink tubing for this job, and/or a favorite source?
(I'd want to wrap together a standard 1/4 instrument cable with a headphone cable, and I'd like the resulting bundled cable to still be somewhat flexible.)
I have just received my Rock On Audio cable. It works very well however it is fairly expensive and I am looking at having a replacement cable for the time it might fail. So, I am interested also.
On the downside, I just got an email from 1964 ears saying that my ear impressions are too short (don't go past the second bend in the ear) so I have to get them redone. The Audiologist is sick this week so it'll have to be the next. Darn it, I was hoping to have them for a slew of gigs in December.

For what its worth, I emailed 1964 ears about this as I was considering going the V6 route instead of the Quads. I was told that the V6 is more of a reference IEM and that the Quads were more directed towards live performance. It probably depends what you intend to do with them but, respectfully speaking, I wonder about your decision to mix FOH with in ears.
I don't intend on mixing FOH with ears in. However having good quality ears makes it a whole lot easier to reference things and allows me to mix all of my musicians ears easier.

Question to the OP ?
What type of over volume protection do you have when using IEM ?
Does the sound man have a good handle on this or can he kill your ears ?
My ears have been ruined by loud fu%^&*+ bands.
Tinnitus in both ears, daily nightmare and have been wearing hearing aides for 5 years.

At our church they have limiters put in place to avoid anything too bad getting you. But you can still get surprised at how loud things can get with a good seal.
The biggest thing I've learned to do is zero out all my mixer controls before plugging in. Even with the limiter, if the guy before me was using non-custom IEMs the mixer's volume is usually set high enough that spikes below the limiter will be loud enough to hurt.
Luckily I'm getting good at being able to get a good mix at a low volume, then turn up the whole picture at the end. Works well for me.

Yep, this is the key. You should have some kind of overall volume control for yourself so you can start low and then turn up once you get a good mix...either on a wireless pack that you're plugging your ears into or on the Aviom box.
