My first Bass: Warmoth/Musikraft Build

Hello all,

Been messing around with guitars since I was a kid but always thought I should try a bass. Partly because I have big hands and also because the job of the bass player seems to suit my personality more.

I don't know if either of those are valid reasons for wanting to play bass. I guess time will tell.

I have also wanted to try a guitar build so I thought I would do both at the same time.

I 'm so happy with the result that I now realize I should have done this a long time ago.

About the build:

Warmoth Body - Alder 4lbs 9oz (finished in Nitro from Reranch and Colortone)
Musikraft Neck - C-Shaped .88/.98, tinted Nitro followed by clear Nitro, 6105 frets
Note: The fit between these two was astoundingly perfect!
Lindy Fralin +5% overwound pickups.
Gotoh GB640 resolite tuners
La Bella FL760
Bone nut - my first attempt (went a little too deep, need to do over)
Hardware slightly aged with muriatic acid fumigation.

Finished weight 8.3 lbs.

---

After finishing and building this bass I felt an instant bond with it as well as being hooked, OK a bit obsessed, on bass guitar in general right away.

Looking forward to learning from you all! Thank you for looking!

Dave

Great looking bass! Wondering how you like the MusiKraft neck? I am a huge Warmoth fan, but they don't offer a radius smaller than 9.5 or 10. I would REALLY like to try a MusiKraft 7.25 and would appreciate feedback on them.

Hi Bob,

I'm very happy with the Musikraft neck. The quality is top notch as far as I can tell. I have a Strat neck on order and plan to order a Tele neck from them as well.

I like buying bodies from Warmoth because you can choose the actual piece. Seeing the grain and exact weight is something I think only they offer.

I thought it would be a good idea to get the neck from same company but Warmoth didn't have the neck profile/thickness I wanted. I have no doubt they make great necks, they're options are just slightly more limited than Musikraft. Then again Warmoth may offer some things that Musikraft does not.

The most pleasant surprise was the fit between the Warmoth body and the Musikraft neck. I honestly don't know how it could have been more precise, and I opted for pre-drilled holes. Hoping the next one is the same.

Wanting to play bass is a valid reason for wanting to play bass :D

Very cool project, if it were me I'd do two cream PU covers. It brings out the parchment color of the pickguard layers.

Congrats

Thanks Reed,

I was not sure which PU covers I preferred so I put one of each thinking I would change it eventually. But for some reason I sort of like it the way it is. Sort of in keeping with the Frankenstein "partscaster" theme.

We'll see. I think I maybe want to shield the cavity so I may change it after that.
