My First Build/Mod, What was it?

That is a fantastic guess. I would say it qualifies as nearly right. The Bass I used was most likely made in the same factory as this Brice was, but it is not a Brice as I said. Good guess.

BTW... This Bass is sold as a 35" scale but is actually a 34" neck on a 35" setup, so the intonation is unusable from the factory. You may have read about it here at TB. And yes it was a string thru body before the mod.

I think you might be closing in so I will give it a few more, any takers?

the fretboard has identical fretmarkers. and i dont know too many companies that start ont he top then go tot he bottom

I never would have thought that it would be the markers that gave it away. Sharp eye.

How it was made:

1. Remove all finish
2. Add 1/8" to one side of headstock and 1/4 inch to other side
3. Laminate front and back of headstock with Flame maple front and Burl Maple and Dyed Aspen (I will never use this again, the color is not fast) for the back
4. Grain matched, simulated inlay trussrod cover
5. Water buffalo horn nut
6. Dress and level fret work, radius edges of neck, remove poly from back of neck and buff to satin finish, color match neck joint
7. Fill MM and S coil cavities, design and cut dual HB and SC cavities.
8. Cut horns and body to new design including cutaway radius at 24th fret area.
9. Laminate front and back using book match.
10. Rotor extra wood to open up electronics cavity, install magnetic cover, laminate cover to match pattern.
11. Burst paint body, tan over gold.
12. Shield all cavities, drill control and switch holes
13. Install EMG HZ HB, EMG Select SC, 5-way pickup switching, Bartolini preamp, piezo bridge, piezo/mag balance, 3-way Mag/piezo select, active/pasive selector, Wilkenson open tuning machines, and kill switch.
14. Complete set up to killer low action and dead on intonation.
15. Brag and enjoy!

What did I learn:
A Mod of this level would have been better as a complete build, and laminates are not as easy as all the sites claim they are.

All in all a neat experience. I hope to start my next complete build this coming spring. I figure I can have it designed, and the raw parts bought by then. I think it is going to be a 5 string, neck thru, single cut.
