My first *cough ... build

Thanks to all for the replies and opinions - keep them coming.

The width and overall location of the upper horn is definitely the main thing most people I show this to have issues with. To be honest, it looked a little narrow to me when I drew it, but I wanted the horn to flare at the end. When I fatten up the middle of the horn, the flare gets proportionately bigger (more or less) and starts to look little clunky. Maybe I could get a little more creative with the cutaways?

I placed the template over my Alvarez 5 string, which is my most used and comfortable bass, and it also has the same 34" scale:

This was the first time I really compared the two together and was kind of surprised to find out how similar they are. The "reach" and center of both horn ends are nearly identical, and the old bass is a 5-string (I forgot to ever mention that this will be a 4-string).

Does anyone think that the narrow horns will be more of a structural issue, or is it more aesthetic, or both?

Again, thanks for the feedback.

Are you getting your materials locally?

I'd love to, but I'm not sure where to go. I was referred to Rare Earth Hardwoods by a builder/musician friend of mine, but he said that they seemed a little expensive (his opinion). I had already ordered my materials online from Gilmer Wood Co., and am very happy with their products and prices (no affiliation).

Next time around I may check out Rare Earth. I don't mind paying a little premium to support a local business, nor do I expect to get good materials on the cheap all the time.

If anyone knows of another quality supplier near Traverse City, I'd love to hear about it.

The body template looks good, but I have to agree with the other people here, that top horn needs a tweak. I think you should start by looking at the lower horn. The lower horn looks great, and I think part of the reason is that it gets wider as it gets closer to the body. This makes it blend in with the rest of the body in an elegant way.

The upper horn, on the other hand, just kind of sticks out of the body. I think the reason is looks goofy is not because it's too narrow, but because the width of it doesn't taper like the lower horn. The middle and end of the horn look great, but it should get a wider as it gets closer to the rest of the body. I think that will get it looking just as elegant as the lower horn.

This. Try and tweak the join point of the upper horn at the body so that it comes in at a slightly steeper angle, starting from about 1/2 - 2/3 of the way through the curve. I think that would look a lot nicer.

Other than that, I really like it. Especially the 2x2 headstock.
