Yeah, I know. No pic's, no bass. One of these days I'll buy a digital camera.
Bought a Squire VM fretless Jazz bass. I've never played fretless before and even though I don't have a huge amount of free time I still thought it would be a good challenge for me. And so far it is!! Been playing it off and on through the night and wow...this is differant!
Love the finish as it's kind of a tobacco burst and it looks great without the pickguard. Nice feeling neck, seems to be your typical J neck profile and it plays great.. Can't really compare the pickups yet to this and that but they seem to be of a vintage vibe. But they seem to have a nice, warm sound to them which is nice. The weight is comfortable too. According to my digital bathroom scale it's 9 pounds.
Needs a good, proper shield job. I had my '73 J bass shielded after I had a set of SD Antiquity II's installed and it was of a huge, huge help. Had to lower the action a tad and the intonation really needed help. Took a few but I've almost got it dead on. Had to bring the neck pickup a lot closer to the strings as well. Still working on that as well but it's pretty close.
Due to a problem with my eyes I wish the position markers on the side of the neck were bigger. Due to a fault in my left eye my depth perception is pretty shot and I have a hard time judging where I am with things that are close up. Got a ton of those "floaters" in my eyes as well and that doesn't help. So trying to hit the note right on the line while having trouble seeing where I am is a bit difficult. But it's new and I'm sure in time I'll adjust to it.
I also got a used but fairly new/old style Fender case with it that looks like how they made them in the 60's. Took the whole thing out the door for less than $400.00!
Not sure what strings I'll end up with but as of now I really like the tension of the strings that came on the bass.
Another reason I bought it is because of church. We've been doing some acoustic sets that have gone over very well and I can hear how a fretless would fit in very nicely with things. I'm going to surpise everyone and bring to this Wednesdays practice session.
Any tips from those who play fretless are more than welcome as well as any string recommendations.
