My first project!

The plan:
1. start with my squire affinity jazz 5
2. re rout the body for string though.
3. shield the cavity and re wire with high quality pots and quarter pounders.
4.Fill and drill the headstock for a new set of tuners (4+1 set up)
5. get a laminate top for the headstock in a very plain maple color OR paint it in an Olympic white to mach the body.
6. Apply "fender" decal to headstock and call it a day.

But first i need some help.
my questions:

1. what is a good bridge i can get for not too much money that will accommodate string through?
2. what is the best method of filling holes on the body (structurally and tonally)
3. should i go for the laminated headstock or should i paint it?

1. There are too many to list, but if you want the fender vibe, get a fender replacement like the one in the photo you've posted.

2. Depends on the size of the holes you want to fill. If they are screw holes, wood filler, epoxy, toothpicks & glue, etcetera will all do the job equally well. Tone will not be affected in any way shape or form regardless of method used.

3. Painting is easier, and in my own view would look cooler.

well it seems like you really want a Fender instead of a Squier (Fender decal and string through body) I would not bother if the Squier plays fine, maybe shielding the cavity and upgrading the pots would be the best for this bass. Or you could save your money and buy that legit American Fender. :ninja:

Truth be told, i have WAY to many expenses to afford a new bass for a long time, I have a set of schaller tuners sitting around from an old bass i had, i figure the fender decal would be easier to locate then a new squire one. either way this is all for personal comfort.

okay guys i got my headstock planned out! I'm scanning in some pics as we type!

so the filled in holes are the current tuner locations, the large diameter holes represent the new tuner bore, the base late is the tuner base plate, and the holes in the base plate are for the mounting screws. All of the measurements where done on a 1:1 scale drawing of teh headstock, using the actual tuners as reference. I believe that it should look legit.

Its looking good, except that the +1 tuner needs to be laid out like I've shown below, assuming the five tuners come from a 5 in line set as I mentioned above. I'm not nit-picking, I'm just trying to help out a dude from my beloved home province of Alberta! :D

Ive decided to just change out my electronics and go string through. I want to re-route the body for string through so i get practice before i do the same to my ibanez (which as a string through ready bridge)

EDIT: I also wanted to do the fender-fing to the squire to remind me of my old fender (took it out to Ontario this summer, where it got stolen from my uncles house while I was out).
