oh... In the first vid it looked like a fretless, has no front facing dots though?

Nice rif in this 2nd vid... thats mainly bridge pickup right? (I see in this vid now its no front dots / fretted... I can imagine these being tricky tunes to get down!

(note to this thread, on this 2nd vid, bass punches through, guitar player asks for more guitar twice)

Here's some stationary cam video of last night's gig so you can hear for yourself. Private party gig in 1/2 of a 6,000 seat arena. Best listened to through headphones or something other than laptop speakers.

Interesting what folks say about Ken Smiths not cutting through in the mix. I bought a 1995 CR-5 (Zebrawood/mahogany/ebony), and right now am watching a video of last night's show w/12 piece band + horn section: CR5 + Markbass F1 + Ampeg SVT 810.

It simply kills. Saws through the mix, growls, big time low end, every note just hugely...there. And slapping? Forget it; perfect. I am so freaking HAPPY. Had no idea it sounded this good out front.

that's a strange, i own a Ken Smith BSR5MS, and it cuts thru the mix fine... i've also owned a 5 string HH SR, and its either i dont cut thru or i end up sounding like Fieldy with the clicky attack.

i guess i wasnt compatible with the EBMM SR 5 HH ... while the ken smith and i are more compatible.

i managed to get a really bassy tone out of it when i cut the mids, crank the bass and cut the mids on the amp... if that aint RnB ready, i dont know what is.

That's the great thing about gear (and music in general), it's so subjective.

You had pretty much the opposite experience as I did, and that's great! Diversity - different people play different instruments in different ways with different tonal goals. Just the way it should be!

Congrats to the new KS owner. I own 2, myself and never had any problems cutting through the mix.

Greetings, i really have to say that my BRS5MW cuts through the mix like a chainsaw through a birthday cake, and i respect the gentleman who said that his doesnt, honestly is the first time that i hear that complaint about a SMITH,,,and congrats on that Beautiful SMITH.

I have owned a few Smiths and cutting through the mix is never an issue. I've played with loud guitarists & loud drummers and my Smiths have always cut through even with flat eq settings.

I saw a post by Ken on his website about somebody having the same issue. It turned out the person bought the bass in Florida and because of the humidity's effect on the wood the bass was not sounding the way it should.

I purchased both of my Ken Smiths while I was living in Florida.

I ordered my BMT6EG WITHOUT exposed pole pieces because my buddies smith was all rusted on the pole pieces... It turned out it was more from his body sweat more than from the humidity, so I ordered my BSR6EG Fretless with exposed pieces...

I never experienced problems with the bass not sounding great while playing out side... but if it is a really humid day, it affects sound in general and how sound carries through the air from speakers or any sound source etc...
