My First Time- WOW!

Last week I purchased my first medium scale bass, an Ibanez Mezzo. It came with round wound strings, which I planned on replacing with flat wounds, but they were on back order.

I decided to order some D’Addario tape wounds. I wasn’t sure what to expect but after reading some reviews I went for it. This is my first set.

My initial impressions are, WOW! I love the sound and feel. They are easy to slide on just like the flat wounds. Comfortable and they sound great. I think we have a winner!

I have a Frankenbass with a 32-inch scale Jaguar H neck, Epiphone Rock bass body, Bart split-coil J-pickups. I also have LaBella black tapes (with the light blue silks) mounted on them. I also enjoy the change of pace from rounds: big tone, easy on the fingers, all the reasons we play tapes.

One item: because of the internal shielding of the Barts, I do not have the hum some players have because the nylon tape disconnects the fingers and strings from the bridge ground. On other basses, I address this problem by using EMG actives, which don't use a bridge ground; therefore hum is a non-issue. If your bass ends up having noise, despite shielding, I recommend either upgrading the pickups to EMG actives, or at least have a grounded chrome pickup cover so you can anchor your thumb to provide the missing ground link that a grounded bridge and conventional strings have. I have that on another bass.
