I assume its a very modern Jazz tone, between the pre, Joe Bardens, 35" scale, and tonewoods like wenge?

Wenge does not occupy the prominent places on the bass to really affect the tone. The body wood certainly shapes the tone, and to a lesser extent, so does the BEM fingerboard.
How do you like those Bardens now, Greg? Wide and open sound? Those exposed rails look HOT!

Ah, I assumed, being on a lot of the neck, and a layer under the top, it would have some affect, live and learn, eh.
I made the same assumption loud and clear in the shop one day in front of Keith, Gard, & crew.
This is how I learned the wenge tone plate is mostly about looks.

Yes, the lamination between the top and back has little (if any) real effect on tone. However, the wenge in the NECK does indeed affect tone, gives the bass a bit stronger of a midrange punch to my ears.

So that's what all that racket was while I was in my bass lesson! He looks very pleased, as well he should. It's a gorgeous instrument - I love the body top, and mostly the grain of the outer neck laminations.
Was nice to meet you on Monday, Gard. Did Cam get a chance to test-drive the bass also? I'd like to have been able to stick around to hear that!

Yo, dudes! I'm back after a long, fun-filled week at Bass Camp (I still feel like a major dweeb saying that). "This one time... at Bass Camp..."
Thanks for all the compliments! I'm really digging the bass. And, sorry Adam - this one will not be subjected to your poaching ways anytime soon.
Camp was really an incredible experience, and I'm sure I'll be making some more detailed comments once I have a chance to digest it all. Most importantly for now, the Roscoe handled very nicely (although you might be suprised how little playing actually goes on at camp). The best chance to play came on the last night at a pretty amazing jam. Everyone got to sit in with a killer band consisting of J.D. Blair, Kelly Gravely, Reggie and Joseph Wooten, to name just a few... I plugged into Anthony Wellington's Aguilar rig (MONSTROUS!!!) and had a ball playing with fellow TB'er kesslari. My "jazz" Century Sig was thumpin' quite nicely, and it really let me cut through on a little solo that wasn't half bad.
The tone is most definitely a jazz bass sound, it's not your typical Roscoe tone. That just means I need to order a more typical Roscoe at some point, right? Yeah, right, we'll have to let the ole bank account replenish first, for sure. The Bardens are every bit as clear and articulate (and powerful) as they are in my Thumb, and the 60's placement that I chose really gives me a much beefier bass tone (compared to the Thumb).
A week later, and I'm still completely thrilled with the bass. Suprise, suprise
