I have been practicing as much as I can lately as time allows. Not noodling around, but focused practicing. Primarily I have been working on using my ring and pinky fingers on my playing hand to mute the strings properly and minimize noise. It's been working very well and, as a result, my desire to practice and play more has greatly improved....

...Which lead to my "epiphany." It's one of those things that you "know", but when you actually see it in action it reinforces the importance of it. And it is....

...There is no replacement for good technique.

I always "knew" that, but it really hit me in my attempt to learn how to play while reducing sting noise. Foam under the strings near the bridge and string wraps at the nut did help some, but the only real cure for my poor technique was to practice playing with good technique until I learned how to play better.

It just really seemed to hit home here. Now I feel I can really start to learn some new tunes and improve my playing that I have greatly improved my right hand.

I'm with you on that, bro! I just took my 8th "knee-to-knee" lesson from Dave LaRue, and he still has me working on technique training (as he has from lesson 1): fretting and plucking finger/arm strength, dexterity and accuracy. I've been taking lessons for over 2 years now, and he is the only one to really stress the importance of technique. The theory will come later AFTER I know HOW to play the instrument.
