Double Bass My Latest EUB:

Greetings:

I've built 14 EUB's over the years.... finally I built one just for me! I have upcoming gigs with a singer/songwriter whose stuff really lends itself to an upright sound So it was a good excuse to build my own.

Bubinga face on Cherry body. ebony fingerboard (from my homeboy Bob Gollihur) and fancy endpin. Correlli strings, K&K BassMax pickup for a simple, great sounding pickup system. 40.5 scale and 'cheater dots' (what can I say???) I also embedded graphite rails in the maple/walnut neck for a little (probably unnecessary) extra neck stability.

I took it on a gig this last Sunday afternoon. There was another guy on the bill with a URB and same pickup system. My 'stick' sounded way better plugged in than did the englehart he was playing.

it's a stock adjustable 3/4 size bridge I get from my good friend Bob Gollihur...... I do cut it down just a bit so there isn't quite as much of a break point acros the strings.

I ordered a bass from Karl within a few days of him posting these pics. Having never played or heard one of his basses did not bother me because it just looked so good that I knew that it would make a nice piece to put in my living room if I didn't like it. I received the bass yesterday and after a little tweaking I have to say that this is the best electric upright I've owned or played by far. Super comfortable neck, great sustain, great tone. Has the feel and sound that I want from an upright, not "electric" sounding at all. Mine is basically just like Karl's except it is a 41.5" scale and has a Full Circle pickup. EUB's I've owned in the past are a Messenger, Ned Steinberger original US series, Original Zeta handbuilt by Fred Marshall himself, and I played a Clevinger supplied by the US Navy.

I highly recommend this bass!!

I happened to revisit this thread(rainy day ) and just read BassJunkie's comments: Thank you so much for the lovely commentary!

I didn't realize you were a navy band guy! I went in the Navy Band in 1970 as a trumpet player/bassist. somehow the orders got changed and I ended up playing bass on the USS Chicago off the coast of scenic Viet Nam while off duty from stoking the boilers! They gave me a Kay electric bass with the action about 1 mile off the fingerboard. I think that is the reason i got into repairs/building
