My New Baby - How To Protect Her

So I just got my new baby. Ain't she purdy? I also just got an Ibanez acoustic/electric. Both new.

Quick question. After only 2-3 hours of play time on the acoustic, I have a buddy stop by and was checking out my arsonel. So I turn over the acoustic, and instantly notice a small spot of buckle rash starting to form. About the size of a dime and is coming from the small bronze "rivit" that is installed on a pair of most bluejeans. Where the front pocket and small condom pocket attach.

Now, my acoustic is a $400 dollar guitar. My SG? Well, maybe a smidget more.

Is there anything that can be done to protect the back of a new guitar to protect against this aside from always playing in a pair of silk boxer shorts? Or shoving a feather pillow in between?

I spend $200 on a new smart phone and it gets instantly protected with the Otterbox case and screen protecter.

Do they make something to protect my $1000+ guitars?

I shift the buckle of my belt to the left, like 10 or 15cm or so, even when my shirt is tucked out. Because sometimes it does get through. Other than that, I accept that my Gibson Thunderbird won't always look new or unscathed. It gets used, what can you do.

Invent a cutout the shape of most guitars thats made out of the same material my Otterbox screen protecter is. Charge $50 bucks and I will buy one. You sell couple hundred thousand of them and become a millionair.

They sell that stuff in sheets for protecting all sorts of various stuff, just cut to fit. I would be concerned about its affect on the finish though, might peel some off with it. Gibson nitro can be delicate.

Please correct me if I am wrong here, but isnt the Nitrocellulose finish the dull/flat top coat that is put on the Satin finished guitars? Mine is a high gloss finish.

The Axe Glove? Hmmm, interesting. Be perfect for when practicing around the house.

Nitrocellulose finish can be gloss as well ;)

And I don't know how thick such an axe glove would be, but aside from the fact that it looks absolutely ridiculous IMHO, you'd need quite some thick fabric to make sure that you'll have no rash at all (rash on the bass that is :P )

I dont wear a trucker or cowboy belt buckle. Dont wear a belt all together. I buy pants that fit. I also dont tuck my shirt in. Im a cnc machinist. Not a buisness man.

I do have an idea where the rash on my acoustic is coming from....

My son fessed up that when dad isn't around, he pounds on my basses. I thought something was a little funny, cause when I stand and play with the strap on (dont take that the wrong way please :D), the rash I am getting doesnt line up. Like 2 inches away. Or if I was about 4-5 inches shorter, then it would line right up.

At least my boy is honest and told me. He's a good kid.

I agree that the AxeGlove looks absolutely rediculous. I wouldnt be going on stage with one, thats for sure. But for around the house during practice, I see no harm. Cant hurt any. And its cheap... Does look stupid tho...lol

I did a review on these once: Link Removed

The reality of it is; I could leave my Squiers sit out in my driveway between gigs and there wouldn't be a scratch on them, I bought an MIA Fender P-bass last year and within a week I got a tiny chip in the paint. Just there to mock me.

I know its inevitable, but there is just something about a brand new, glistening guitar. Sure like to try and keep it that way for as long as I can. I'm sure you ALL can understand that.

Like my Cobra Mustang. its now 10 years old. Seems like yesterday I drove her home. Dispite a couple, I mean a couple very small rock chips on the front lower bumper, its completely scratch free.

And its like that cause I take steps to prevent sh!t like that from happening. No country roads, dont follow close to other cars, wash and wax frequently, etc...

Figure I'd try the same approch with my Gibson. Whether its playing in my underwear from now on, or buying something to help prevent, it's in my nature to want to keep her as new as possible, for as long as possible. Just saying...

I don't share that view to be honest, not that I'll thrash my bass around, but I do just use it and yeah some buckle rash and maybe one or two dents and chips in the paint are part of that as well. I don't mind as long as it's because of myself.
That's also why I'm a bit sad that the basses I can afford right now don't come with nitro finish (nitro ages much better and with more mojo imho)
