I also can't believe how good the bass sounds in passive!!! I've been thinking about playing it in passive only for the next month or two, to really get to know it's unadulterated sound, and then slowly experiment with the eq to see what possibilities are there...

+1 I love the sound of my Prima in passive mode, and that selector switch gives you some great options. I like the way it loads the pickups, and man, do Sheldon's basses sound good passive! I can't wait for my Afterburner prototype to get finished with its "upgrades!"

I love it. I'm currently considering a Dingwall afterburner II 5 string.I hope to play some Dingwalls as soon as possible

the ABII is a great bass!!! the electronics package is really super, with a bass boost as well as a treble cut/boost and a mid frequency cut / slap contour.

I'm not sure what the details are as I haven't been into the shop too much this summer (I help out on fridays during the school year) but I seem to recall that Sheldon is making the ABII bodies considerably lighter these days (as in weight, not in color). so if you are considering an ABII, it might pay to look into that if lightweight basses are your "thing"

what kind of "upgrades" are you talking about? are these aftermarket upgrades, or did you catch Professor Dingwall at a weak moment?

Quick question thou- both you and Sheldon mention this bass has amazing overtones (IIRC), more robust than other primas, can you atttribute that to something specifics? wood type choices or a magical piece of body wood etc

In regards to tombolus's AB prototype, I believe his upgrades are replacing the older guts/pickups & installing all the "newer" electronics FD3, Blueqube etc

hmmm... the sound probably comes from all of the profanity that Sheldon, Landon, and the rest of the crew wrote on the body laminations before glue up... (Just kidding about the profanity... it might be profane, but to this day they STILL won't tell me what they wrote!!!)

seriously though, I couldn't tell you where the tone comes from. as I recall, we experimented just a tiny little bit with the prima artist pickups. also the neck is considerably different from anything that Sheldon's done before, and the tuners are different too (more mass). I doubt that the body woods are what is making the difference, as the core is still the traditional Walnut and Alder and the top and back are a fairly small minority of total thickness.... the densities of the crotch walnut top and the spalt maple contrasting layer may be cancelling each other out, or interacting in some weird way, but this is still such a small portion of vibrating wood when compared to the rest of the instrument.

If I really had to take a guess as to where the wicked tone comes from, I guess I'd have to put my five dollars on the neck.

it would be interesting to hear Sheldon's thoughts on it though...

Don't take this the wrong way, but I look at that bass and picutre future archeologists (and/or alien life) finding that instrument and giving it a hallowed place in a musem wing dedicated to human acheivements. Simply unbelievable.

I had this bass sent straight to Sheldon's shop (it was already in town ), and he will be installing FD3 pickups, the bluEQube circuit, a D-tuner, and new volume knob & selector switch.
