My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

The cost of a second door attempt is roughly equal to my planned costs for acoustic treatments. I’ll deal with the bad door swings arrangement rather than having an untreated space. As I’ve mentioned previously (and reversing the expression to fit my needs here, haha); I’m far from broke, but I’m NOT rich.

Here are two of the door seals.

Here’s a visual representation of the door swings conflict. It’s honestly not THAT bad, but still a little disappointing given my intention of building the space that I wanted to my specifications. Oh well. You live and you learn.

Even without the lever installed (ie there’s a gaping hole in the door currently), the room gets mega quiet when the door is pulled shut. My wife visibly jumped when I shut the door because the room feels noticeably more intimate when the ambient sound level takes an appreciable nose dive.

Tasks remaining:

• HVAC contractor on Monday will wrap up the mini split.
• Install electrical outlet air seals and covers.
• Install door lever.
• Install base trim.
• Install door casing.
• Touch-up wall paint.
• Nail set, bondo, caulk and touch-up paint all the trim.

That’s it for major construction prior to moving my gear in. I may still build a baffle box for the HRV, but that can be done after moving gear in. I also need to bring in shelving and a cabinet for the vestibule, as well as hang all of the treatments, but those are super minor tasks. The real challenge will be resisting the urge to move stuff in before the acoustic treatments arrive.

So, you'll still be conscious (Due to the injection of VERY fresh air provided by your HVR) while the axe murderer does his thang and nobody will be able to hear you scream???.........

Ain’t new technology wonderful.

In some older studios, people used to overbuild their own doors. I’ve seen literally foot thick doors.

The door looks normal, but the internal components are not found in typical doors you’d use for “normal” construction.

I used GIK for treatments, mostly from their Alpha series.

If I fall in the studio and no one is around to here it you can guarantee that I’ll be making a huge amount of noise. I’m not going down without a fight!
