My New Studio Build (perhaps overly detailed)

Got the first rug returned to IKEA during my lunch break. I was about to head into the store to grab the replacement rug and I noticed that the line for the cash registers was so long that it extended across the entire warehouse. I'm sure most folks are familiar with the enormity of an IKEA warehouse, so to say that the line was long would be a gross understatement. I'll swing by after work to see if it's any better.

Yes, I know those lines. You'd think that it wouldn't be that bad on a Monday. At least you found a place to park. Finding a spot is nuts at the IKEA near me.

Google analytics shows that this location's busiest times on Mondays is right at noon. That's baffling to me, but the lines were no joke. What was a joke was that it was, evidently, the busiest time of the day and there were only 6 of the 29 checkout lines open. Google says that the quietest time of day is shortly after I get off work, so I'm optimistic that the second trip will be successful.

Current plan (I have to keep doing these planning updates to keep myself on-track with finishing everything and not just coasting :p )
  • Tonight I'm going to setup the second rug, which will allow me to setup my desk, move in my monitors, etc.
  • Tonight I'll confirm the bolt hole sizes of the guitar wall hangers, and whether or not additional washers will be needed to make the bolt lengths work (similar to what I did with the wall treatments).
  • Tomorrow (and maybe Wednesday) I'll pick up the necessary bolts/washers for the hangers, snap some lines, drill some holes and get those setup. There are ten of them, so I might not get all the way through.
  • Wednesday/Thursday I'll continue moving gear into the main room.
  • Friday and Saturday I have other obligations that will keep me away from studio work. I might be able to do a little more setup on Friday, but it won't be much.
  • Sunday and Monday I'm going to try and get the vestibule and sound door trim caulked, and I hope to find and install a strike plate for the sound door. I'll have pictures of the strike plate issue when I get to that. It's an... interesting problem. Speaking of; @peterpalmieri, can you take a picture of the door hardware you used for your sound door with a good shot of how the strike plate and the door seals interact?

Despite being out of the parameters of an equilateral triangle as monitors are typically setup, this yielded the flattest bass response in the room. It’s wider than it “should” be, but it’s balanced at the listening position, and yielded better results. The first reflection points are just missing the most direct panel, but I needed to space the panels as I did for the function of the space. Such are the drawbacks of not having enough space to have a dedicated control room and a dedicated live room. It still sounds great despite that. I’ll be doing more measurements and will probably move the monitors around a bit more to dial it in. This will all change when my new desk arrives, and it’ll change again when I add Adams’ companion sub to the system.

I have not yet installed the door seals. With the NE humidity in the summer and dry heat in the winter I have quite a range of swelling and shrinking.

On my lunch break I picked up the rest of the fasteners needed to install all of the guitar hangers. When you can't touch a stud that happens to be 3" behind the face of drywall anywhere in the process of hanging ANYTHING, you have to get creative with your use of washers and toggle bolts. Tonight I'll be measuring, marking, measuring, marking snapping, measuring again, marking again, marking a third time, drilling, drilling, drilling, and finally installing... All of that ten times :D
