Double Bass My new Upton Concert!

Les,

So this is the gorgeous bass you wrote me about. It is beautiful! WOW, stunning indeed. :hyper: Any chance of hearing a clip or two of the bass in action?

I have been extremely busy this week working at the Chicago Loop location and haven't had a chance to call Mr. Upton. I hope to spent a little time (as much as possible actually...) talking through my decision to purchase a fully carved DB to see what advice he has for me. I can't afford the baby you just purchased but I am sure the $5K will get me a lot more bass than I actually own right now.

Again, Contrats and may your make sweet music with it.

God bless!

HAM

Thanks to all who replied for your kind words and sentiments!!!
Geez Doc .... Does this mean you aren't missin' the Kay Bass you usta own :D ?? Joshing Aside ... Congrats on your new gorgeous Upton Bass :) . I thought you were gonna get the cool "loop-de-loop" teardrop purfling on the back near the neck / button ..... What happened there :smug: ?? Oh Well ..... Cool Is Still Way-Cool ..... But it probably wouldn't have made it sound any better .... I just shouldn't have wasted my time on givin' you photos of Epis and my unlearnt suggestins :p .

Bob--

Thanks for the kind words. I was remiss in not adding a line in my post thanking you and others who helped me with the purfling decision. Oh no, please don't think you wasted your time. Your suggestions, in particular were very helpful to me and I appreciated them greatly.

I was trying to keep my original post short and didn't give the whole story. So here's more of it. As I mentioned, I originally ordered a European Professor. When my order was put on hold waiting for the USA production, the plan was for me to have a USA-made Professor. The budget allowed for me to have one with all sorts of fancy extras, including highly figured wood and a special purfling design. In fact, it was to have a purfling teardrop just as you suggested! Around the same time as production was planned for that bass, Gary and Eric developed the fully-carved Upton Concert. The cost of one of those with fewer extras was just about the same as the "tricked-out" Professor. In the end, it's the sound that won. Given the "recurve" just below the neck on the top and back, Eric added the double purfling that would accentuate the design.

Again, thank you for your help and enthusiasm.

That is a very attractive bass. I hope it sounds as good as you say it does; when are you going to let us hear it? :D

I need a bit of time. I tried recording it the other night but the recorder was bit too close and got overpowered. Funny, it's the same setup that I used with my old bass. I'm workin' on it...

drurb,

Gorgeous! Congrats on this new bass and I wish you many happy years with it. Like a few others here, I definitely would like to hear some sound clips.

My son has an Upton Hawkes and we just love it! To this day he still gets compliments on the amazing very big sound that it produces, so I can just imagine how yours sounds.

Have fun.....I'm jealous!

Thanks again to all the well-wishers. I assembled a file of sound-clips-- just different little ditties that I think let you hear the character of the bass. The recording is straight out of my H-2 that was perched several feet from the bass.

Thanks for the clip!

Not sure it does it justice. I intentionally played slow, simple things so that the character could be heard. Small computer speakers just don't seem to do it.

Hey, what kind of Upton fiver are you waiting for? Will it be shipped or will you come and get it? I'm guessing the former. Want me to play it first? Just kidding-- although... :)

Congratulations in getting your new Upton Concert Bass.
You must be in awe. It's beautiful and the sound clip
reveals it's classic sound. I would bet that you just can't
stop playing it for more that a few minutes.

After reading the posts here at TalkBass for a long time
I purchased an UB and have had it now for about 10 months.

I will say it is better than I hoped for and has only gotten better.
Thanks for confidently speaking out about the Upton Basses here at TB. It certainly helped me.

I have a "left-handed" USA made Upton Hybrid Hi-C 5'er.
It's just what I wanted and could not be happier for the money spent.
It definitely sounds and plays better than some basses I've played that cost a lot more money.

Knowing that you've had other DB's.
How do you feel about the money spent?
For my 1st DB I wasn't sure about the "Flagship Model".
If I felt the way I do now about there basses I would have
gotten the fully carved model.

I've Got a good teacher and can't believe the difference a year
can make. I'm sure you will now raise to a new level of playing
and enjoyment.
-------------,Congratulations :bassist:
