My new Wal!

I hear you man. You are right in that everything matters (the bass, the direct box, the head, the cab, the mic, the mic pre, the compressor, the input channel on the mixing desk, the recording medium, the EQ applied during mixing, the mastering, etc.) That being said, if you have spent enough time in a recording studio, either as an artist or an engineer, lots of pieces of recording gear have distinctive characters that you can pick out if you have heard it enough.

Don't shoot the messenger, I'm just relaying what I was told when I asked the question! :bassist:

Def "not shooting the messenger here"!...the only one that was wrong...(err incorrect) on their statement is your little birdie!!

If you were to take Fleas Wal and "dirt chain" and lets say for argument here the same head(s) and cab(s) that were used. To a COMPLETELY different studio using different

-mic pre
-compressor
-mixing desk
- software program
and anything else you can add to this list...there is no way that me,you or anyone is going to pick out "distinctive characteristics" to the point ....that we would be able to name the recording gear used by listening to it

We we will have to agree to disagree. I think there are absolutely certain pieces of recording gear that have their own particular sound. In fact, GK heads are a prime example of that. If a head can have a distinct impact on tone, then it's possible that mic pre could do the same.

Also, I'm not sure how you can be so positive that the person I asked about that recording chain is incorrect. If you have better insight, then I apologize!

Sorry for the OT. Wals do indeed rule! Here's some olive ash goodness:

Olive is indeed sweet. Im having updated pics sent to me by the owner of this sweety this weekend. Then i will decide if i pull the trigger and have FBass re-fret it for me. I emailed Paul to see if he would mail me a set of new frets...woo hoo

I miss my MKI and wish i never sold it

Yeah man that bass is awesome looking. Unfortunately, the electronics in my olive ash MkI have begun to crackle horribly. The bass is currently unplayable through an amp :( I have an email to Paul about what my options are.

I can see a cold / disconnected solder joint on the master volume pot inside the control cavity. I'm reluctant to do the work myself, in case there are additional joints that are on their way out. Hopefully I'm up and running again soon!

Not sure how much time you personally have spent in a studio "noodling" around and experimenting with gear....but your missing the point here.

Here is my point.....In the link below at 0:39-0:42 You be the judge and question as to how MUCH that sound is "off" from the orig recording"?...then factor in this guy (using this bass) now plugging into Flea's dirt chain and picture that sound in your head.

PLEASE read rest of post before clicking on link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qldyi0yR3E0

THEN consider that Jaymi is using a different
-Wal
-model Wal
-strings
-cab
-head
-recording medium (not even direct and a crappy YouTube compression)

You consider ALL of the factors here and you determine for yourself on how far "off" (or not) this sound/tone is from the BSSM

im sorry dude but BSSM is all Wal and grit....any thing else added is minor when it comes to what your ears are hearing. Hey if your hearing something different ....then your statement of "agree to disagree" is ok with me. Maybe if your "little birdie" watched the link he would have time to take his foot out of his mouth. :eyebrow:

All this Wal talk....think im gonna go plug her in and make some noise

:bassist:

TMB,

Please don't be condescending. You don't know me, and you definitely don't have any idea how much studio experience I have or don't have. I've not made any assumptions about your career, band, or playing situation, so I would appreciate the same courtesy. Also, if you don't hear a difference between between the bass tone on "Suck My Kiss" and the video of Jaymi showing off that MkI, then I'm not sure the issue is with MY ears.

The second video sounds closer to the actual Tool version I agree, but there is still a noticeable difference. I think it's obvious that you have made up your mind about my opinion on the subject, as this is not the first time you have dug in on me about this topic. Why don't we just drop it?

Not sure where your getting assumptions from.....if you read my post its says "I have no idea on your studio experience"....that is totally opposite

Also I said bsically how far off the BSSM are you hearing?....of course there is a difference ....again "not getting it"

Agreed to disagree!...no probs

Dropped as requested :-)

I have to agree with toolmybass, although i see both sides. The thing is, if i play my wal with my tone, my setup, my fingers, my attack, my eq etc. Its pretty much gonna sound the same whether I switch out the cabs or what program I run it into. Im not sure what fleas setup on BSSM was but whatever it was it sounded sexy as hell. And as far as the other comments go, Idkhow you guys have the balls to work on your wals. I'm terrified to work on mine lol. I look at it like a holy grail im not aloud to mess with. Just pick it up and play it. Thats it. I envy ppl that set up their own stuff. I'm one of those ppl that fear messing with the truss rod or the bridge lol

I could be wrong, but a little birdie told me that the sound on BSSM was a blend of DI, an amp sound (GK head, with Flea's Mesa 2x15 mic'd in a closet), and some grit picked up from a split feed being sent to a Marshall guitar stack. \m/
That's certainly possible. John recorded the guitar parts with his cab facing the floor, a closet is not so far off. Plus, Flea in Sir Psycho, Flea certainly blended the clean bass tone with the MuTron.

Who is this birdy? ;)
