Kevin - that's a fine bass and don't let the word "Starter" on it fool ya!

It's got the capacity to draw the artist out of you since it's got a great neck, great tone and nice controls too.

I own an Ibanez SR500 and can tell you that the whole Ibanez line is almost 100% flawless and surprisingly rugged and very dependable.

Keep it nice and shiny and it'll serve you for years and who knows - it may even be something to pass off to the next generation when the time comes. Never sell your first child.

Later on you can get a bigger (more expensive) amplifier for it and the bass will still rock on!

Now go find someone to gig with and have fun.

Oh - yeah - get an electronic tuner too. It sure makes it a lot easier to get the strings tuned right; humans can't really get a trained ear for a while, and I've heard pros who are out of tune and don't even know it - bass notes are that hard to differentiate - especially in the lower notes.

The bass itself won't be changing causing the retuning all the time but the strings will respond to various temperatures.

Welcome to the community of bassists! It may seem like things are slow in the early going but keep at it.

And SurferJoe is 100% dead-on, the sooner you can find others to play with, the better. You learn more that way than practicing by yourself and it's a lot more fun, too.

HI, thanks I love it.

I do have a tuner too. I'm taking good care of it as best I can.

I am noticing what I think is fret buzz on a few frets for E and A though, I've tried raising the strings but it's at the bottom not the head so it's not helping.

Other than that I do love it, and that pic looks just like it.

The EQ button is kinda neat I thought.

Yeah well I first need to get my fingering going and learn to spread my left hand better, will work on scales to help.

I don't really know anyone to jam with yet, but my daughter is learning violin so I got some sheet music. She's learning to read music better than I am but we'll get there, and hope we can play soon.

I think it'll be cool to have her do the violin while I play the bass lines, some of which are made for piano lol

You probably have a neck-bow issue, which is pretty common on mass produced instruments coming "out of the box". If you haven't had what's called a "set-up" done to your bass you should have that done by a professional as soon as possible. They'll make sure the neck is straight and true and at that point you can set the string height how you want it. If you're just trying to get rid of the buzz by raising your strings while the neck is out of whack, you're probably going to wind up with the strings higher off the neck than they need to be - which will make your fretting hand work much harder than it has to in order to get good sound.

Check the FAQ here on TalkBass or Search "set-up" as I'm sure there is a wealth of info archived here on the topic.

I bought the same bass about a month ago (in red) and I'm loving it! Like the others said, it probably needs to be set up. I had the salesperson give a once-over before I took mine home.

Also, change the battery. Mine was fine when I picked it up from the store, but a week or two later it started to sound funny. I put in a new 9v and it's good again. Must have just been sitting at the store for awhile. Don't leave the bass plugged in when not playing, and the battery should last a LONG time.

Okay thanks, tried a search but wasn't sure what I was looking for so no luck. The battery is fine, other then the one issue the bass sounds wonderful.

They told me right away to not leave it plugged in like I did with my guitar.

OFF TOPIC: Anyone else have issues of the site logging you out? I just had to log back in for some reason. My cookies are fine before you ask :)

I used to have that log-in/out trouble when I use M$'s browser, but Firefox/Google seems to hold settings pretty good.

Is CCleaner set to run and clear cookies when you boot on??

Hey, I got that for my starter too! All in all its a pretty nice bass with some growl, lightweight, and a nice thin neck, stays in tune for me (same as my other Ibanez SR).

I had the same fret buzz when I got the bass, my teacher (also a guitar technician) helped me set it up, and then there was no buzz and it was awesome to play it.

Two running themes with both my Ibanez basses, 1. Stay in tune well, 2. had fret buzz when i got them.

The only thing bad I could say about them is that the pickup covers are pointy, and the black finish shows fingerprints easily. Overall a great bass to start and learn on.

I picked one up in excellent condition for $99 a few months ago and am really happy with it. As a note to other potential buyers: the GSR200 neck is actually a bit thicker/wider than the SR necks. I noticed this when switching between it and my '94 SR400, so I went to the Ibanez site to check, and sure enough - their specs show the same thing. It's not a huge difference (about 3-4 mm at the nut) but be aware.
