My P Bass Refurb

My '94 Black label. Hipshot tuners, Hipshot D tuner, EMG geezer pickups and wiring harness, pickguard off am older p, not really which year or make, dug it out from my parts bin. Gotoh 201b bridge, and chrome knobs off a 70's p bass. It's set up for a tribute band right now.

Besides that, it's completely stock! ;)

I had a "black label" MIM. I gutted it (had tiny little pots and super thin wire and the Strat-style knobs. Made a new wiring harness, shielded it, new $10 pick guard I got off Amazon and dropped in an old American Standard pickup I had lying around and strung it with some LaBella flats. Came out great and sold into a buddy of mine.

Absolutely love the ashtrays, classic look.

Those came with it. I was thinking the chrome small ones would look good. I haven’t ordered them yet.
Don’t like the vintage look? Lol.
I've always actually liked the Strat-type knobs on some Precisions and Jazzes. Probably because my very first Fender was a Mexican P, pretty much a twin to yours except for being red. Probably made around the same time as yours, from the looks of it. Mine is/was made in '95.

Those are 500 K pots in the one I just refurbed. I have a set of 250K Dunlop pots I bought and didn't use I could put in there but I don't know exactly how to install and which capacitor goes on the tone knob.
I just bought one of the wiring harnesses online and only thing I had to solder to it were the pickup wires. It had CTS pots, capacitor and a switchcraft jack. I think it was around $10. I guess if yours had 500K, maybe the pots on mine might have been the original ones - which aren't ideal for a passive bass.

best way I found to remove stubborn push on knobs, dental floss or shoestring. Some videos on YouTube about it, it essentially wraps under the knob, just lift and they pop off.

A t-shirt works really well. Get the edge of the t-shirt around the underside of the knob and make sort of a pouch or sling around it and then pull up to remove it.

It had great action an aged lacquer neck and all original hardware. It was real dirty and had a funk about it.
It took three attempts with naptha, rubbing alcohol and Murphy's Oil Soap to get the funk off it.
It took taking all the hardware off and cleaning it several times.
I replaced the pickups with Fender Original P Bass pickups and a new pick guards. The pots were fine.
Here are the pics. Enjoy! Plays and sounds awesome!

Nice job...Are you open for business???
