My preamp journey

second only to the Fender TBP.
Tell me about the Fender TBP. I had their 800 Pro amp that had a much different pre-amp that I really didn't care for. Very clinical although the amp was a monster power wise.
Kirk Powers (SVT15B formerly on this board) said he really liked the tone. I have to call him later today and see if that's one I need to find and try.
My SVTIIP pre is being repaired and won't be back for a few weeks.
SVP-CL will be back from rehearsal Wednesday.

Don't like it. It's hard to get a clean sound, it's got too much sub low, too much ultra highs, and it sounds synthetic.

We need a new abbrev to supplant YMMV: YEMV (your ears may vary.) As @agedhorse points out elsewhere, what sounds good to each one of us is good enough for each one of us. That may have been a bit of a paraphrase, but we keep looking until we find that combination of gear that sounds good to our own ears.

There are thousands of BDDIs out there, and they have been a standard and staple pedal for decades. The BDDI does have a signature sound, but it is actually pretty flexible, and can be changed up a lot from the signal chain in front of it.

With the proliferation of pedals and pedal DIs in recent years, the BDDI has lost a bit of its hipness to the new kids' competition, but if it sounds good to any given player, it definitely does. It does to me. And it mixes well either live or recorded.

Yes, to my ears...and all that. I know plenty of people love them

Couldn't agree with this more. What works for one person might not work for someone else. There's been some popular stuff out there that I never gelled with, and there are certainly as many opinions on gear as there are players. I think we are lucky to have so many options.

That being said, I hope this thread doesn't come off as bashing any preamp or manufacturer. Not my intent at all. Some of this stuff sounds sooooooo good that it pains me to get rid of (the Fatdrive and the Sushibox SBVT), some I just don't gel with (the Darkglass stuff) and some just isn't what I am looking for (transparent, like the Messenger). That doesn't mean it's bad gear - quite the contrary, if it wasn't good, it wouldn't land on my radar. I've just been able to try a lot of different gear over the past few years.

Everyone's ears and needs are different. I hope I've been able to help someone out, cuz allmof this is really subjective :)

Really powerful Fender tone stack with parametric EQ and distortion. Very well made, sounded killer - really full, fat, and bassy. Loved it.

Hmmm
I never loved a Fender tone stack for bass and I had an early 2 channel Alembic pre a longtime ago.
OTOH, I played out of a hot rodded silver face Showman the other night and the tone was good!
Maybe I'd really like a Fender tones stack so long as I had at least 1 band of quasi-parametric EQ.

For me, the parametric EQ is a must. I like the fullness and the fatness of the TMB, but it's limiting. It's typically a fantastic base tone, but needs more imo.

@moon-bass, have you tried out the Crazy Tube Circuits Locomotive?
Yessir! It's going on my 3rd board (the big board).

I really like it. It does a mild overdrive to full distortion. I'm planning on using it to add a little OD, so it will be "mostly on."

I will admit I like for straight ahead rock BUT It does have a lot of subs going on...I'm not a fan of using it outside that genre for the way I play.

I know it didn't suit @moon-bass as well.
I actually don't mind the simple drive component of the BDDI v2 and I'm ok with it because I hardly use any. (Keeping it around 9 O'clock was just enough for me).

Does anyone have any experience with an Ashley BP-41 pre-amp?
There's one in the classifieds and often wondered if they were good. As a comparison I didn't really care for the Yamaha PB-1. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't love it. Also sold an early Alembic pre.

On a happy note, The Ampeg SVT-IIP is fixed and the SVP-CL has been gathered up from our rehearsal space.
Hope to have a shootout between the Crest CA6, and the power amp side of a GM MBF800 this weekend.
I'm thinking I'll stay away from hot rod basses (like G&L) and just use my 60'P and 72' J.
I'm certain they will all sound awesome but curious as to what flavors!
