My preamp journey

This came today. Sounds like my ol 800 RB. Smaller than the Plex (and I always thought the Plex was kind of artificial sounding).

The SBVT is gone, traded in part for a cab sim. I'm not overly into actual simulations, but having a parametric EQ and a LPF in one box helps me to get rid of two pedals on my board.

Also, on order is a Sushibox Dr. Watson. The only other pre on my GAS list is the Master Effects Super 400, based on the Mesa 400+.

I ended up shifting GAS to compressors, then envelope filters and speaker sims. I've already gone thru a bunch of each, I'll post results once I finalize what I am keeping.

This came up in another thread about preamps and I didn't want to hijack that thread so I posted a new one.

I did this because I decided that I wanted to get the flexibility from different preamps - I literally couldn't decide what I liked more, the Fender tone stack, the Ampeg, the Eden .. So I decided to find a solution to my desires. It's worth note that I used to use huge stacks (Mesa 400+ with a pair of 4x10 powerhouse cabs for a long time, also Eden and Trace Elliot) but over the years my needs have changed and I've gotten older and I needed smaller and more portable stuff. -I did modular rack gear for awhile as well, but recently sold all of my rack gear. My ultimate goal was to find a portable rig that sounded great that could also be extremely flexible. I needed grab and go capabilities, but also needed to be able to play everything from small coffeehouse gigs to large outdoor festivals. I also needed the capability to have a small enough set up so that I could bike and walk to gigs. Also, I'm a gear junkie and a tone junkie.

FWIW, the Quilter BB800 became my amp of choice. Small, light, loud, simple preamp, and has the ability to bypass the preamp altogether. Absolute killer dynamic power section and transparent DI. Also, I have two stand alone DI boxes, a Radial JDI and a Lightning Boy TI, depending if i want to go really transparent or if I want to thicken my tone a bit.

Now to the preamps, and my thoughts. All of these were fine preamps, not a loser in the bunch.

Here's what I currently own, only because I can't make up my mind to narrow it down:

Master Effects Super 300 - SVT in a pedal. Killer tone, great dirt and clean tone. Can't get a bad tone out of this once.

SIB! Fatdrive - FAT. Fat, thick, sweet, tone, tubey goodness. It's not overly flexible but it sounds crazy good

Trace Elliot TE7 (?) Graphic EQ pedal - while not technically a preamp, it's a good portion of the TE preamps of old, and really gets that killer TE sound.

Eden WTDI - nails the Eden tone. NAILS it. Small, cheap, light - what's not to love?

Noble pre - my #1. I've never heard my basses sounds so alive and 3D. the hype is real, folks.

EBS ValveDrive - Fender tone stack chewy goodness, real tube, and two modes - one gives you a cleaner sound, the other just a hint of dirt.

Tech21 Geddy Lee - Everyone raves about the distortion, which I agree is top notch (and that alone would make this pedal worth it) but that DEEP? Heaven. And hey - instant Geddy!

i also have an Arkham Oracle in the mail, and SushiBox PA and SBVT on order.

Next post - what I've owned
And I thought I was crazy for preamps.
I got into these magic boxes late in my tone seeking journey but on the whole these weren't around back in my heyday. Oh how I wish they were as i'v finally found the tones I crave, better late than never I suppose.
Here's the lineup:
One Control: Silver Peg, a V4 B mimic.
One Control: Crimson Red, B-15
One Control: Blue 360, guess what this is? These are all micro pedals.

AMT: A Bass,an Alembic clone.Tiny pedals with a real tube.
AMT: O Bass; Their Orange entry.
Orange Bass Butler: Biamp in a box.
Tech 21 DI-2112; Gedal says it all
Sushi Box: Sunday Drive X, a 2 tube presentation of the Sunn Model T.
Catlinbread SFT: Not specifically a preamp but close enough for R&R and the SVT grind.
Darkglass Harmonic Booster: A great clean preamp from the folks that specialize in dirt.Pairs up nicely with my Vintage Microtubes.
I'm probably not done as I'm currently lusting after the Sushi Box SBVT and the Nux MLD Bass preamp and DI,this one is interesting with many cool features including cabinet IRs. The journey never ends.

How do you like the One Controls? I've also recently discovered IRs and just bought a few speaker sims.

The journey does never end, it just keeps going and going and going ... Vive la journey!

I like them, they're tiny and sound very good. They definitely have the characteristics of the amps they're based on.Decently priced also.I use mine quite a bit.

Let me ask you this.If you had to choose betwixt the two which one would you keep?
I traded the SBVT if that gives you a short answer :)

As to why, it was simple. I wanted an SBVT in a box, and the Super 300 delivered. I was looking for almost an effect, I really wanted the SVT to shine thru. If I was looking for something to show more of the character of my bass, I would have stayed with the SB, but in this case I wanted an SVT tone and tones of it. Also, I preferred the grind on the 300, the tube OD on the SB is smooth and tubey, it sounded good but I wanted more dirt.

Same with me. Something about the Super 300 just cuts through and has great sounding dirt. Not knocking the SBVT as it is a great sounding pedal.

I have been looking at everything I can find on the 300 and man it sounds like an SVT.It really knocked me out.I think I'm gonna go for it.Plus there's a batch said going out at the end of the month. As much as I like SB no batches are scheduled according to the site. And it's less cash which is never a bad thing.

I gotta thank you for bringing this company to my attention, they totally flew under my radar.Checking their Facebook I got a load of their stuff and among other things the Super 800,their take on a G.K. rb800 looks interesting.ME said they usually take 2-3 weeks for a build so I'll be ticking off the days.

AMT - fat
PAX - punchy
Superstack - bassy
EBS - creamy

Might I ask you about the clean capabilities of the EBS?

I've embarked on a similar journey and It seems that the pedals based upon the Alembic have really clicked with me, with the AMT and Particle Accelerator being my current favorites.
I'd buy a Broughton in a heartbeat, but they are hard to come by in the EU.
However, EBS can be had in abundance. I was debating the purchase of a Valve Drive DI, but then decided against it and now I read here that it is based on the circuit I fell in love with, so it's back on the list.
I require a clean sound, though - and I don't want the lows to distort even with the bass knob turned up and with a 5 string. Both the AMT and the Sushi Box (I have the older version, without the X) work well in that regard. The vibe I sense from the EBS feels like it is tailored more towards being a drive pedal with preamp capabilities and so I fear the breakup point might be too low for my requirements.

And could you set those in any kind of relation with the Noble? That has been on my GAS list forever, but I've never gone the last step and clicked the 'order' button. If I decided on one preamp to keep around and sell off the accumulated mass of pedals that takes up valuable shelf space in my home, I might free up enough financial firepower to actually pull the trigger on the Noble, but again, I worry about getting a warm, fat, juicy lowend with a 6 string that provides a good fundamental without breaking up.

The Valvedrive is marketed as a drive pedal, but it's definitely a preamp first and foremost. I can get a very, very clean sound out of it - there is a lot of room before it breaks up. It's very smooth. I have it set so that it's very smooth, and then when I engage the "vintage" switch I get a touch of breakup. It's a cool pedal.

The Noble? It's not gonna breakup - it's very, very clean and smooth. Warm, tubey, full, it's almost like it turns your sounds 3d.
