Double Bass My string journey documented (to be Continued)

Traded the upton? How? I've commissioned a DB with a local luthier and I need to sell my existing DB. I'm hoping to get $11k out of my bass, but it seems this price range is high for most unless you're a pro.

I listed the upright everywhere and It was a Lower end priced bass. Found a guy with a 7/8ths Shen he wanted to trade for and I wanted to get a 7/8 Shen so it just worked out. I got lucky.

But...I have sold 3 basses in the past 6 months. Just got lucky

Sam, where is "everywhere", and what listings worked best for you? I've listed on CL, TB, and FB marketplace...no bites.

Talkbass, eBay, reverb, Craigslist, and talked with local musicians. I just ended up knowing a lot of bassists that need an upgrade.

I asked my friend to play my Shen thinking he may be interested in upgrading his low end plywood

Found someone on Craigslist looking for a beginner upright and sold them on my Brecker hybrid

Knew Jason Stewart and started taking lessons with him. He wanted an upright like his 1920 German bass but wanted a thicker top. I had exactly that so I sold him my 1957 Haussmann bass

Searched Facebook market place for someone who posted a wanted add saying “looking for an upton hybrid” I had one and messaged him and he convently had a Shen willow 7/8 he offered to trade which was exactly what i planned to buy once I sold the upton.

Hope that helps.

Friend in town asked If I had updated my thread (I guess I'm famous now!)

Tried Zyex and needed a replacement C string. Threw belcantos on the juzek, and on a whim helicore mediums on the shen. I liked them on the shen but not the juzek.

After 2 months gave the zyex another try and they left in a week. Threw a brand new set of spirocore mediums on the juzek on May 21st as a prep for grad school. Those will stay on.

My 8 month old spiros (plus a new E) went on the shen bass after a new bridge and full circle went on it. My plan will be if I change my strings on the juzek after a year as I typically like to, the ADG will go on the shen and they will be broken in the same way the new E will be.

Helping Litchfield Jazz camp get a camp bass. My old realist and a 15 year old set of spiro reds will go on there (gift from my luither).

So back to spiro mediums on everything lol

That's a lot string changing man

I have more strings used or new that I haven't put on yet. I have an unopened Pirastro Jazz set from 1998. The year my daughter was born and also when I started to play less. In fact I kept the strings even when I did not have any bass. I have some used guts I just got but the Flexocor Deluxe just sound so good.

It's not too crazy but I have 7 extra sets between 2 basses. I have given away 3 sets last year. I am mostly a Spirocore person since 1989. I will put these guts on even though I have the preconceived notion that I won't like it, if not it goes to my friend's Kay. She sings and plays and has been wanting to try guts for a while

Don’t forget Flexocor Deluxe on top of Spiros. More interesting and more versatile than BCs in my opinion.

For those who are concerned about their reputation as a tight string (for pizz), it’s the whole set that can be tight (on some basses) — the top two are fine.

They loosen up. And even though they are tight you can set the action low without fretboard slap, so in the end they are just as easy to play as a lighter tension string. I have all FDs now and removed the mittel E.
