Also, I've gotten into the habit of practicing 75% of the time without even using an amp. Just jamming along acoustically on my electric basses, getting really intimate with different attacks and playing approaches. Then I plug in and work out these new approaches through my rig.

I generally practice this way as the only time of the day I have time to practice is after the wife and kids go to bed. I also plug into my laptop and open up GarageBand and play that way too. But as others have said, dont get too reliant on just playing through headphones or acoustically.

That is why I have been fighting the headphones for so long. I just dont like to use them. To clarify it was about 3:30 PM so I didnt think it was problem. As a rule I do not play my bass after 8:00 through my amp and turn the sub on my home system off at 9:00 because its the right thing to do. It has its own power source so its not a problem. I am not a prick tennant and never will be. I am respectful, pay my rent early every month. Hell I am the model tennant. Its just this guy has a bug up his @&* for me. My studio borders his bedroom, my question what is he doing in the bedroom at 3:30 in the afternoon? He has the whole freakin house... livingroom maybe I dont know.

(...yeah, they're annoying and don't sound the best sometimes, but hey, they solve most of the issues we all have...there are dozens of good headphone amps with built in drum machines, loopers, etc, that can be fabulous practice tools as well, I've got a 10+ year old Korg Pandora, and still use it daily!)

I once had a toolbag guy that lived next door to me that would watch crappy Anime movies at 4 in the morning with his little audio system turned up. The low end was just drove me nuts! I asked him amny times to please be respectful. He brushed me off a few times then told me to "deal with it bro". So I did I got my SVT pro 3 and 4x10 set up right next to the wall. Pluged in my Bongo and "delt with it bro" took about 45 seconds before he was pounding on the wall. So I turned it up to about 12 o clock and played a little more. He came over a little mad and asked what my problem was. I told him don't bring a stick to a knife fight....bro. Needless to say he was a little bit more repectful of those around him. I think I won. Late 90's, an apartment just off campus from LSU in Baton Rouge, LA, punk-@$$ videogame/(c)rap fan/idiot next door, wife who had to be up at 6 am every day to be at work.

Punk-@$$ liked to listen to his Tupac and blare his videogame audio at 11 (hey, it's one louder!) until 2-3 am every day.

I knocked on his door and politely asked him to respect others and the lives they have to lead at least 3 times. No joy, blew me off with the "yeah dude, whatever, your wife will just have to suck it up..." reply.

Then I told him, firmly, that he would need to grow up and learn to respect others or suffer the eventual consequences. Fell on deaf ears.

Followed "procedure", went to the apartment manager (mind you, this was a NICE complex, not some fleabag), stated my case, was told "we will look into this and address it appropriately." Translation: "I'm not getting my fat, lazy @$$ out of the chair behind my desk in this nice a/c'd office". Three complaints, in writing, hand delivered - ignored.

So...

...Peavey T-Max head (500 watts @ 4 ohms), two Peavey 410txf 8 ohm cabs (4 ohms total load); cabs placed with speakers AGAINST punk@$$es wall, amp turned up to 10 - both pre and master gain; nice 6 string bass with a very solid B string, right thumb on open B string. Wait for the first "boomboomboom" of Tupac, pound on open B string for 30 seconds, wait, hear the sound of things breaking next door, pound on B string an additional 30 seconds, hear MORE stuff falling off wall.

Turn off amp.

Go outside, sit in nice comfy chair on front porch, pop open beer, smile, and LAUGH at moron when he comes out looking all confused.

"Next time, dip$417, don't bring a knife to a gun fight, hmmkay?"

Got really pleasant around there in the evenings afterward.

Someone above suggested a headphone amp... that's the best solution to guitars and bass in an apartment situation.

you should have went right over there and knocked on his door to ask why he is banging on the wall, or kept playing. there must be some type of ordinance or time slot where you are not disturbing the peace. if not, fight fire with fire, bang on the wall when you hear a peep from his apartment. or, start a formal complaint so you dont have to pay rent till the court case.

Just because the law allows a certain noise level doesn't mean that landlords can't be more stringent.

If you were playing at 3:30, I would just say screw it, and keep playing. You were playing at a reasonable volume at a reasonable time of day. Just because he is a loser doesn't mean that you should play acoustically or through a headphone. You are doing nothing wrong at all. Unless there is some very stringent noise rule in your lease, you just follow local ordinances.

If the look on his face was like the look on the guy who lived next to me, I know you laugh a little when you think of it. The toolbag that lived next to me actaully got thrown in jail he had 4 DUI's in like 3 months time. So I guess Karma worked for me on this one. Funny thing is the little old lady that lived in the suite under me said she was very happy I did what I did. She said anytime I want to play my bass to go right ahead!

I feel sorry for anyone who got me evicted out of my house for crap like that. Certain people in the neighborhood would start having "accidents".

Trust me, a couple of the people who I found out were responsible didn't have accidents...but one of them did have to spend $900 on EACH car of his to get detailed.....how is that possible? Between the whole noise thing and him threatening to kill my dog I got pretty creative...and I'm not gonna even mention what I did to his and his wife's food when they came into the restaurant I worked at.

Just returned the headphones. I called my Landlord this afternoon from work and explained my situation. She agreed with me and I have permission to practice till 7:00 pm. Her exact words were he is a crybaby and that she has been there when I was practicing and couldn't hear it until she was right next to the wall.
