My turn to rant about the mix

Saw Michael Franti and Spearhead last night at a really good outdoor venue (Mountain Winery in Saratoga). Great show, btw. And beautiful venue with great gear. But...

Either:
The bass player was TOTALLY locked in with the drummer, only played one tone, and only played it in sync with the kick drum;
OR:
The kick drum was up so far that you could not hear the bass. At all. Except when he was given a solo.

Grrr....
I had to consciously decide not to let that kill the vibe for me - the energy was great, the tunes were fun. But I sure would have enjoyed things more, and enjoyed the groove more, if the bass was freakin' audible...

While I love a good kick drum mix, the trend of cranking the kick and scooping the bass to a bunch of 125hz boom is a stylistic pro audio choice that needs to take a dirt nap.

I had that same issue when I saw Train last year in NYC.

I don't go to live concerts anymore - it's WAY cheaper (with MUCH better sound) to buy used concert DVDs off of Amazon. Next best thing to hopping in the time machine to see bands at their peaks . Beer's cheaper too .
