Mystery Ampeg Cab

Anybody know anything about this particular Ampeg cabinet? I've searched all over the interwebs and can't find any info on it.

It's obscure.....

We called it a "chorus enclosure", which IIRC means it was splittable into two half cabs electrically, for use with a 2 channel chorus amp.

I have absolutely NO idea...... I had to look up the model number, and I remember just about ZERO about it aside from what I posted.

Ah, but there is a catch........

I don't support ANY new stuff........ Just older stuff made during SLM times......

And I would bet money that they were as happy as clams in mud to see me and the rest of the SLM design folks go........ we just didn't "fit in" to the Loud structure of Jamie Engen the clueless stockbroker CEO and Gary Reilly the (non)engineering manager.

We'd probably have fit in better with the new lot..... they seem to be really trying to get stuff done..... Considerable new product output, decent stuff, no serious problems I know about, not perfect, but pretty good.

That's OK, stuff changes, it's their turn now. it was probably time.... We had a 20 year run, and I think we did OK. It's better for us to be out before we got too stale. Maybe they can do better than we did.

I know what you mean. Newer Ampeg stuff just does no work for me. I LOVE the older stuff, though. New stuff just doesn't feel right.

There are a lot of people who LOVE every bit of their newer Ampegs, and who am I to say they're wrong?

Now that's humble.
You guys created and changed the sound of electric bass amplification. Also some very nice guitar amps (Rolling Stones had the signature Ampeg guitar tone).

Doing OK and a 20 year run are huge understatements.
I believe you and your colleagues would probably have never gotten stale do to the passion you bring as evident in your posts.
Have been following your comments in the SMPS vs. torrodial thread and it's clear that you are still at the cutting edge.
Also interesting is how the big name engineers snap at all who dislike the low end response of the SMPS technology but not you. Can't tell if it's respect or fear!

+1 I hope we're able to look back on this new team and say they were really making honest attempts to do right by the brand's legacy, considering the hand they were dealt by LOUD

+1000 Looking back through the SLM catalogs, it's pretty amazing all the new & different products they turned out over the years. Not all caught on or stayed around, but the fact they were always trying new things while keeping the ones that were tried and true said a lot!

i'm down with all ampeg...new stuff, old stuff...all good to me. well, ok, maybe not everything they ever made ever but i love the new stuff they have out and they really are trying to make good stuff. loud's really gotten their stuff together now that they're not run by an idiot.

it is because I have designed analog and class-D amps, and understand how the low end can be affected by "choked power" and other problems, whether due to an SMPS or a weak regular power supply. We went to some trouble to avoid the problem.

BTW, Jimmy: we do more than wind power..... we have clients who do trash-to-energy, and ordinary ones who make home heating and cooling, restaurant equipment, whatever. If they pay, we solve their problems.

Actually, one of the wind power companies went broke, chapter 11.... they may be back though.

it's fun, a new problem to solve just about the time you get bored with the last one. Ampeg (and the other brands) was a blast, though.... but it was the time, the place, and the people..... I don't think it could be the same, back then EVERYONE was coming up with cool ideas all the time, and Gene Kornblum was smart enough to go with a lot of them.

Maybe Loud can get it to be like that with this Pyotr guy running the engineering. The actual Loud CEO seems to be from industry and appears to be a good businessman, getting out of the way when he needs to.

hope so. the sooner we can stop relying on fossil fuel and have more clean power from renewable resources, the longer we can stave off the de-evolution of the planet. and i think anyone who helps contribute to that is doing a great thing indeed.
