So I was perusing CL today, and came across a Peavey T-40 claimed to be in excellent shape. So I went to take a look at it, and it indeed is in such condition. The rear switch has been replaced. I ended up buying it for nostalgia's sake (I had one in the early '80s). Those things that look like scratches on the upper horn are just the stuff you see in swamp ash ... worm traces? There are no nicks, dings or scratches on the body. I don't know its age yet.

There is a problem with the neck pickup electronics ... the tone control acts like a volume control. With the volume full on and the tone full on, the neck pickup functions perfectly. But if I roll off the tone control, the volume goes away. The volume control does the same thing. I took the PG off and checked it out, and everything seems hunky-dory, except that whoever replaced the switch wired it backwards. I fixed that, but it didn't fix the tone control problem. Everything works fine on the bridge pickup.

In the pictures, I haven't replaced most of the screws in the PG and PUs because I'm going to replace the caps to see if that's what the problem is with the neck PU tone control. If any of you have any insight regarding this, I'd appreciate your sharing it with me.

Anyway, I want it to exist, so here are some pics, less than 15 minutes old.

All the wiring looks correct. I'll check it again. The tone pot is actually a kind of coil splitter. With the tone control all the way "up," the pickup is is single coil mode. As you roll it back, it gradually brings in the other coil, until it's fully humbucking when it's rolled off all the way. My biggest fear is that half of the neck pickup is not working.

ok, aren't the pickups designed so that the volume halfway up is a single coil and all the way up is a humbucker?
