N1/2BD - My Miezo 18 Arrived!!!

For a Low B, we recommend a minimum of 30” scale. 27” could be done, but this is where you start having a lot of overtones and where it gets muddy.

For E-C tuning, you could use our 22.75” scale length using B-G (i.e 125-45) string gauge. If you wish to use a more traditionnal E-C tuning (i.e 105-32), we’ve found that either 25.5 or 27” works best for that application.

With the 18”, you can go as low as A (pitch of the A string on a regular 4-string bass) and still retain clarity and great tension.

Tuned D G C F A# but I didn't change the bridge from the E A D G C tuning it started in, so the fret buzz is a bit more noticeable unless I fret dead-on (or even choked up for a bit of left hand mute).
Bridge and Neck were normalized, but the clips recorded about 10dB apart. The coils in the bridge pickup are wired in series while the neck is in parallel.

It was a surprise that the recording levels were so different. The bridge doesn’t sound that much louder in a room, but maybe it is. I assumed it was more voicing than output. Hard to argue with the recording levels though. I actually like the bridge more now that I know what it sounds like normalized against the bridge’s output.

No internal preamp on mine. Just the passive Nordstrand Zen Blades, with the neck coils in parallel and the bridge coils in series. These pickups have me thinking about future builds and/or mods to my other basses. The bridge one really works for me, particularly with my outboard preamps (primary one is a Hilbish Sol Invictus). I’ve got a Nordy neck PU on my Ric, and they seem to make stuff that my ears like (as much as I hate the goofy copy in their website product descriptions).

I’ve been doing some exercises this week and the fingering is getting easier. It’s a different technique than I’m used to, particularly with the single cut, and I’m finding my fingers need to be dead on top of the frets as I get higher up the board. Also, that cutaway is deceptive; the highest fret is the equivalent of a 28th fret on a standard scale bass, which I’ve never had a reason to play before

Thanks for looking it up. Could not find the right chart to confirm my crap measurements.
I measured to the Fret and not the middle of the neck. Also had different measurements on my bass that are in different tunings.

Not sure what current times are, so you’d have to message them. The shop is open for now, but Malaysia could always shut down again. They’re probably working on a few backlog items. Definitely order the Nordy stuff sooner than later, as that was a big chunk of my wait time, since their delays translated into shipping and production delays for the shop.

If I were to do it again with a functional, practical stripped down budget build, I’d go for standard wood/finish options and just a single bridge PU, but still upgrade to the Zen Blade.

These “simpler” builds definitely caught my eye while I was waiting for mine to be finished. Note the pickup placement is more “neck biased” on these single PU models. I’m sure they sound great, but knowing what I’ve heard, the bridge works better as on “only one” option. It’s more of a lead/melodic/arp voice.

No preamp? Nordy is killing it!! I had to go back and read the specs I swore it had a preamp. That cutout is deceptive I would have never guessed that but no matter I'm still in love.

It totally makes sense for my solo work, but I don't know how others would use it. Playing along to traditional "rock" tracks, the neck PU was a better fit, but it isn't meant to be a bass, so AC/DC covers isn't how I'd use it.

I did switch over to the 30" Mustang and noticed my left-hand fingering technique changed. I definitely play "on top" of the frets more than before. And that's just been in a week.
