NAD - antique store find or fail?

First, been reading forums on here for the last 4 years since I started playing bass. Thanks to TB for all the great info. Saved me a great deal of time and money getting started.

So wife and I were browsing an antique store and over in the corner I find an old Traynor Beta 150 power amp. I knew nothing about it, but they said it works and it was cheap so I bought it. All my playing is DI with IEMs, so I have no cabs, etc., just a pre-amp. 1.) anyone know about these and is it worth getting a cab for this thing for a practice rig and 2.) if so, any recommendations (looks like Fender Rumble cabs are highly regarded around here).

Why is the amp in pieces? Is that the way you bought it?

Not in pieces I don't think? Just the head in a case/cover. Can be removed for rack mount.

Looks to me like you have several unterminated connectors sticking up in the air.

I remember the amp but IIRC it’s more than 19” wide. That said my memory has been known to fail me.

I see what you mean. That's just junk and wires sticking up behind it in the pic. It's all put together.

Just match the impedance and find anything on CL used for cheap.

interesting to see a power amp with a graphic EQ. I'ver never been a big rack rig guy, but aren't most power amps just that .. power sections only with maybe a level and limiter type control or so ?

cool. It appears to have its own preamp of sorts considering that multi-band EQ.

I was able to find that Traynor made two - one with EQ section and one without. Didn't find much else...

Much like the Peavey Monitor amp. The EQ was put in for people who were moving from using only a mixer/amp combination for the FOH to adding monitors for the first time. EQ and power amp in one package that didn't require a rack. Put it under your XR-600 PA head and you can finally hear yourselves.

I think that you will need a preamp to make that work ! It is a power amp with a graphic EQ

Should be a good amp for that purpose. Traynor's are work horse amps.

Yup. Have a Tech 21 VT Bass pedal. Sounds like I just need a bargain cab for a cheap little practice rig.

The only thing you have to watch for is what type of signal strength the amp needs - an instrument level or a line level. (Probably not using the right terms.) If its very quiet with a pedal, you might need a rack preamp. Unfortunately if you need a preamp, then the eq section isnt doing anything for you.

If you dont need a preamp, then you could just plug right in. Grab a budget cab that works within (greater than or equal to) the min ohm load of the amp, and see what it does!

To me, it would be clutter. If you can fix it up, then use it or sell it at a profit, kudos to you.

Is it mono? If so then thats pretty cool.
