Or a stereotype: The Flannels (everyone wear a flannel shirt or tie one around their waist). The Grunge Rockers, etc.

Try basing it on an iconic song or album title from the era... for instance just from a couple of bands bigger songs...

"End of the Century"
"Ready to Go"
"Parklife" - though that might sounds more like a Blur tribute band.
"The Country House"
