I use flats, usually D'Addario because my music store carries them. I think I like LaBella's the most, though.

I feel I have to have some nickle in the string. I go back and forth between nickle coated and pure nicks

d'addario med light halfrounds on my P/J
seems like everyone likes to hate on those...dunno, i don't like the feel of rounds period and i dont like the tone till they are a month or two old. plus my P/J is tuned a step down and i dont want to use monstrous gauge strings, but the slightly higher tension makes the strings less floppy. i would use flats but the music i use it for is louder rock and just wouldnt fit. the halfrounds do feel a bit sticky out of the box but that goes away (for me) in about an hour of playing.

I like to use a variety:
Tokai P-Bass copy: 50-110 Webstrings flats
Ibanez Blazer : 50-105 Elites steel Rounds
60's Commodore EB2ish semi : 45-100 d'Addario Chromes flats
70's Maya Rickenfaker : 45-105 Elites nickel rounds
All have quite varying tones, different tensions - what I'll use depends on style music I'm playing.
Covers all bases for me.

I'm using mostly DR strings these days. One set of marcus miller fatbeams on the jazz, Peacock Blue on the Spector, and a set of Hibeams (or were they SUNbeams) on a 5 string I have and never play.
