Naming Conventions for GTGs

Can I please ask that we have a consistent policy on naming of GTGs - which gives you an accurate picture of where they are being held?

So it is very irritating to keep opening threads talking about "international" GTG - there are dozens of current threads!! - where this does not tell you the location.

Can I suggest that all GTGs and threads about them, be accurately named - as in New York GTG open to all, or London GTG, Swedish GTG for Scandianavian TBers.. etc.

I think we need to have a policy on this to save time and maintain accuracy/honesty/integrity within TB.

Unless you are saying that you just don't care about members who are outside the US...?

No - it would be caled the Swiss or Swedish etc etc. GTG


"International" just tells you nothing about it - not even a clue to which continent you are in !!

It's just misleading and uninformative!

I met a person from Switzerland and a Brazilian last week - so I should call that an "International GTG" - just ridiculous!!

Just to clarify - I think we need to have some way of distingushing GTGs - so if we had 3 or 4 a year that were open to all members, how would we disinguish them..?

We clearly need a policy on naming of GTGs to avoid confusion. It is clearly ridiculous to have a situation where there could be GTGs in Europe and US at the same time, for example and people not knowing which you were referring to?

I think it is clear we cannot just say "international", it must give some indication of location!

Well you could say that about anything on TB!

We obviously need accurate naming conventions - otherwise why bother to split the forum up? Why not just have it all under "bass stuff" ?

So - calling a GTG "International" is for me like saying that "Music Theory" can be lumped in with "Effects" or "Bowing techniques" etc. etc.

We have clearly-labelled sub-forums - so why not label GTGs correctly? Makes no sense to me!!

TOASTED -OK sure, but how much effort does it take to differentiate between a NY GTG (which is a get together for bassists from NY) and an INTERNATIONAL GTG in NYC (which is a get together for any and all bassists that is being held in NY).

And since there are more and more being advertised here, why not follow some predetermined way to title? It's just deciding where to put the WHERE and WHO.

Bruce's suggestion makes sense to me. Although we'd have to specify London UK vs. London ON.

Suggest: city, state/province or country GTG

Berlin Germany GTG
London UK GTG
New York NY GTG
London Ontario GTG

Simple enough.

I aslo agree with Bruce in that there are for more important things to worry about than what happens on TB on a regular basis.

Exactly. You could call a GTG "The International Oompa-Loompa Allcomers' Indoor Deep Sea Ding Dong Fest" and it still wouldn't exactly tax anyone's powers of detection to figure out where it was being held.

So why not apply that logic to forums - why bother naming them logically then - just lump all the forums together under "allcomers"...

Well - why do we apply logical naming conventions to anything - why is this an exception to a very sensible rule..?

So if several groups want to have a GTG that is in some way "international" - if we have a sensible naming convention, then it is possible to identify them; rather than having say 5 threads about these and not knowing which ones relates to which?
