NAMM 2015

I'll be there. I have to work Thursday and Friday, but luckily my job is only located 3.1 miles from the convention center. I'll be able to pop over for a couple hours until the place closes at 6. Can't wait to see what Rob Elrick has been up to all year :)

Wilkins basses and RoadTested basses will be at Namm again. Hall D booth # 3485. Come and check out the new Cayenne RoadTested basse . The bodies and/or necks are all roasted wood. Really light weight and extremely resonant. Introduce yourself as a Talkbass member.

Looking forward to checking out the new Anaheim train station.
when we were building Cars Land a few years ago, I took the train down to Anaheim every day, to the old station that was just a couple of double wides strung together .
the new ARTIC (anaheim regional transportation intermodal center ?) is a big architectural whizz bang, and it was designed to accommodate the eventual high speed rail. (and even a potential monorail to the park)

Anybody driving down from LA (or beyond) should really consider the train.

hint - Amtrak sells beer !, including Stone IPA from the local (San Diego) brewery

So is there a convenient way to take the train from LA to the convention center? Which train and where do I catch it? I'm going tomorrow (Saturday) and I dread the parking snafu.

Amtrak leaves Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles. Then you grab a cab from where Amtrak lets you off and usually there are other people waiting for cabs so you can do a split fare thing.

Important (imo) - you should have the cab let you off a fair distance from the CC if you are able to walk okay. I can't tell you exactly where that is because it depends on what time you are going, but there is always a point in the traffic where you can get stuck and move at a painfully slow pace while the meter continues to run. It can be the same thing if you're looking for a cab back to the station during rush hour. That is, I would walk a fair distance from the CC before picking up a cab (which are usually pretty plentiful during the event).

sorry, I didn't have a computer with me during my trip or for 24 hrs after. Its too late for anyone going on Saturday, but the above info is correct. On weekdays, both Amtrak and Metrolink offer service from Union Station (LA) to Anaheim. On weekends, Metrolink is much more limited as they are basically a commuter network. But I believe they have limited service on weekends and Amtrak operates 7 days per week. And the suggestion to bail on the cab one or two blocks before the ConCtr is GREAT advice. forget the money, the last two blocks of the cab ride can take 1/2 an hour. And for those of you who insist on driving down, bring two or three DVDs to kill time while you wait to get in/out of the parking lot.

The new Anaheim train station is probably the nicest thing in all of Orange County, and I realize that ain't saying much. But as modern stations go, this one is damn impressive.

FWIW - my main comment about the show is that its just too damn big with too damn many people. I took a grand total of two photos - one of Chuck Rainey and one of Jerry Jemmott and Alphonso Johnson (excuse spelling, I've had a few....) My best discussion was with the gentlemen from Danelectro; really nice guy who knows what he is importing. Biggest disappointment - although it was no surprise, the small market for top quality, hand built, tube bass amps means that NAMM is really not the place to see what's available or upcoming. I did see the Matchless Thunder-whatever, every nice.... And more than one small, high end guitar amp company hinted at bass amps in the near future (Magnatone, Supro, for starters....).

And I'll never understand the large number of women who believe that NAMM is really an audition for a Billy Idol S&M themed video from 30 years ago. But I'm not complaining, just a bit surprised. All things considered, AES is less visually stimulating but 10x more interesting.
