Double Bass natation in Bach suites

In my copy of the Bach cello suites transcribed for bass there is an occasional marking under the staff that I cannot figure out. It is 2a---------- and some times is quite short and other times longer. It does not make any sense in terms of bowings, fingerings, or what string to play on. Anyone know what it means?
