Nathan East on New Daft Punk album

I have been listening to this all day on iTunes and the bass lines (real bass!!!) are sick. I have heard that Nathan East was credited on the single they released but don't know if he is on every track or not. Either way, super slick and very tasteful 70's disco esque lines. Check it out!!

Really looking forward to this album.....got a good feeling it's gonna be great in every respect (music, groove, sound quality, etc).

According to discogs, Nathan East is the single bass player on tracks 1,2,4,5,6,8 and shares bass with James Genus on 3 and 11. Genus plays 7,9,10,13. 12 is a synth track.

Exciting stuff. East is just plain strong. :)

Really excited about the new album, especially because Nathan East is the man! He's one of our artists (i work for ArtistWorks), and I did a little interview with him recently about recording with Daft Punk, check it out here:

Both of these guys really brought their A game to this record. I have loved Daft Punk for a long time and had no idea that they were using real musicians on this album. It really paid off! The bass parts are very tasteful and totally fit the Euro club vibe while still maintaining the style of the players.

He's likely using either his signature Yamaha, which is basically an alder bodied, ebony fretboarded jazz bass,

or...

a Yamaha BB series PJ bass.

Sounds more like his signature Yamaha. Tone is also in the fingers and decades of recording experience that he has.

I listened to the free stream Apple had a while ago. I was actually surprised that a couple of the songs were full on band performances, acoustic drums, with guitar and bass. I didn't like it enough to buy it, but I mostly thought it was good.

Nathan East was trying to cop a Bernard Edwards tone TB family. Still, Get Lucky is da bomb.

Huh, is it just me or does the album sound like a Nile Rogers album with special guests Daft Punk?

Nathan East plays, as always, beautifully - he can make anything seem worth listening to.

Also, being very snarky for a moment, how come Nile playing the same four chords with that chakka-chakka-chakka-chakka thing for three decades is considered a "national treasure" but someone like Johnny Ramone doing his buzzsaw ....... meh, I'm being a grumpy old bore. Good luck to Nile and his new album :)

Having said which, I like the album a lot.

You can get very close with a Yamaha BBNE2 bass. I played one that Bass San Diego had for a few days (before it flew out the door), and got hit with a wave of GAS. It is a mind-blowing bass. The only thing that curbed my GAS was going home and pulling out my TRB5P-II. It's tone was close enough that I didn't need the BBNE2 that much.

Nathan scoops his mids slightly and, in fact, he developed a stomp-box with Yamaha (the NE-1) that is effectively a semi-parametric mid cut box. The BBNE2 has a very similar circuit built in. There is a mid cut switch with associated knob that adjusts the mid frequency to be cut. It is one of the best-sounding basses I've heard, and I found that when I played it I could play just like Nathan.

I've been listening to this all week and loving the rhythm section work - so funky - the grooves are everything on this!

Nathan East has never sounded better and he gets a fantastic tone, as well as playing those bass lines that cross the bar lines and really drive the tune forward! :)

Hey, sorry for bringing back and old thred...

but, thanks so much for this post as I've been blown away with this album for a few months and trying to work out how he got that tone... and constantly hearing this 'it's in the fingers BS' is driving me nuts on TB... It's kinda insulting to my 20+ years playing, lots of fusion and prog jazz etc...yes the fingers are important, but for F*** sake, you can not get that Nathan east tone with fingers and a P bass... If you say you can, I call massive BS... That's why most of us have multiple basses, for tone...

So thanks for the post again... I can now hunt one down ;)
