I notice a high "Geek Factor" here in this thread.
I don't really like Nathan's sound all that much. Seems like he plays with really low action and to my ears that always squashes the tone too much.In the studio that seems to work for him but his live tone doesn't move me. His playing does without a doubt. But I'm more in the Marcus Miller camp and I have been obsessing about his sound and his playing forever. So I'm a geek too.
The main thing though to me is that if you really like the way someone sounds Nathan, Marcus, Jaco, Jamerson, worry some about what gear gets you closest but in the end it all comes down to learning their tunes and phrasing.Obsessing about what they play and how they play it. The touch,the concept of how to approach the style and all of that.
And then just play your ass off and develop your own thing from that.
