What a beauty ! It hurts to see that damaged fingerboard but even so it is in great shape, and having all its original pieces. Can't even imagine how nice it must sound like !
Sweet Bass. My 1970 Precision is my main P-Bass. The early 70's P-Basses 1970-1974 can be light weight.

This bass does have a bit of play in the neck pocket and I had to loosen the neck and shift it back into alignment. Any tips on how to prevent it from moving again?

Congrats! I have a '72 same as your guitar but with the thumb rest on the treble side. Put the flat wounds on it and the foam under the strings at the bridge and enjoy the Motown/Jamerson tone!!
Steve, find a painter or drywaller who will give you one sheet of the black diamond cut abrasive they use on the long handles to smooth their joints before painting. Cut a piece the exact size of the neck pocket. If you don't know anyone, you'll have to buy a multi pack at The Depot or something. Probably like 5-8 dollars?
Steve, as a point of reference, this stuff has the same look and texture as Chex cereal, nearly the same scale too! It's about as thin as your standard sandpaper too.
Thanks Fran. I've also heard of people using screening material to stop neck shift too. I think either of these ideas would be better than a shim of some sort.

Personally I'm a fan of the early 70's walnut, more brown than red like the later 70's walnut, the color very 70's-nostalgic. But bursts are always a favorite--dig yours--congrats! And that fret board hole can probably be patched without costing too much.
Those are both nice, but I prefer the rosewood fingerboard...even with a hole in it. I also paid quite a bit less for mine which is not 100% original like these and needed some setup work.

Very nice. My '74 is my #1. Love the fat neck and woody tone. Gigging machine. Very nice score.
If the tuners really bother you, you can buy these (originals) all day long for $150. Get a good set, and you should have no problem getting at least $100 for your old ones.
Here's a question for those of you who keep your 70's Precision in the original case: Do you find that the bass doesn't fit snugly and tends to move around in the case when being transported?

My '72 bass definitely moves around! I got an old grey sweat shirt and cut pieces to put where the lower bout and headstock rests in the case.
Padding breaks down. I have some older cases I still use but if they're worn out I still keep them (still have collector value) but use something newer.
