NBD: 1974 Fender Precision Bass

If the tuners really bother you, you can buy these (originals) all day long for $150. Get a good set, and you should have no problem getting at least $100 for your old ones.

I see that Fender makes Invalid Link Removed that retail for around $75. They look more like the post 1976 Schaller tuners though.

Yes. I have those on a 70s reissue that I built. You won't be happy with them for 2 reasons: They will look too new, and they will not be accurate for your 75 bass. For someone restoring a 76-79, they are exact for those years. Stick with the originals.

I managed to find a set of circa '74 tuners that are in better shape. No pitting, just some oxidation.

A bit late to this thread, but congrats! I have a very nice vintage cream/maple '74 P with an A neck that I just love. Great tone, fairly light, and amazing playability.

I came across a thread with a picture of your '74 P. It looks great, and it's interesting that your bass has the finger rest below the G string even though it's from the same year as mine. I guess 1974 is the year that the finger rest moved north and became a thumb rest.

Are you still keeping both of the chrome covers installed?

1974 was the year the tugbar was shifted to the E string side of the pickguard on P Bass (as well as the J Bass). Of course, as is typical with Fender, there are always exceptions.

Hi, Steve,

Yes, I keep both chrome covers on. I have almost removed them a few times, because I normally have played a P with my thumb on the pickup, but I discovered that I actually like playing with the cover in place. And the aesthetics are a big bonus, lol, though I would not have kept them just for that.
