I've had a mid-70's Jazz Bass that looks stikingly similar. I wonder about those 'chrome' caps tops also. Nobody can tell whether they're originals, certainly, but mine are exactly the same (JB, naturally.) I've always wondered if this could track these basses to a precise vintage, after all. In my book, they're rare. And lovely.

I assumed the volume/tone knobs weren't original, but maybe they are? I do have a set of "flat top" knobs I might swap out, we'll see.

I always try to hit the local music stores when traveling, but have never scored like that!
That's the best way to buy a bass - you know exactly what you're getting.

I've finally gotten over my long-time aversion to 70s Fenders (although Ironically, my 1st bass was a '78 P) you can find some great basses - you just have to play them 1st.

I "rescued" a '75 off of CL last year (2022 actually) - all original except stripped to natural.
Sloppiest neck pocket you've ever seen - doesn't affect it a bit.
It's become one of my favorite Ps.

'75 was the last year for Tort before black on SB, but they were a faux/printed guard by then - not the old style celluloid tort.
Are those strings EB ss flats?

Yes, I believe the strings are EB SS Group Flats (not sure of the gauge), which is a string I knew nothing about until researching them after buying this bass. Normally I play TI Jazz Flats on P basses, but the EBs sound so good I will probably stick with them for a while. I am curious to hear it with TIs, and possibly a nickel round of some sort (Sunbeams?) for comparison, however.

This one has a bit of a sloppy neck joint as well. But again it sounds and plays so well it doesn't bother me at all.

When the guy at the music store pulled it out of the case, I thought it was interesting but wasn't really blown away by the way it looked or anything. But then I picked it up and it was a lightweight, which was unexpected. And then the first few notes I played sounded huge. And then it sounded punchy and balanced across the entire fretboard. So I tried finding flaws by bending notes, looking for dead spots and fret buzz, using a pick, slap, fingerstyle, digging in and backing off, every style I can play (and some that I can't). It handled everything well. The Lollar pups and excellent fret dressing were certainly a big reason for this. I just hope it sounds as good when I get it home as it did in the store lol...
