NBD: 1975 Fender Precision

Howdy,

I was in Omaha NE to visit my daughter last week, and stopped by "Ground Floor Guitars" down the street from her apartment to kill time (killer guitar shop, btw). I had zero intention of buying anything. After playing a few things they said "hey, you might be interested in this one we just got in..." which was a '75 Sunburst P with rosewood board. Original body, neck, bridge and tuners, replacement Lollar pups and harness. New bone nut and leveled frets. Didn't weigh it, but probably 8.5 pounds or so.

And it absolutely blew me away. I'm still stunned at how good it sounds, and plays, no dead spots and not a tickle of fret buzz to be found. Even volume and punch across the entire board, and can bend notes with no choking out anywhere. My main basses are a USA Geddy Lee Jazz and MM Stingray Special 4H - both phenomenal - but this '75 Precision is something special. I'm indifferent to vintage instruments, but I had to have this one, based on the sound alone. The playability and "mojo" are just a bonus.

I've got a '75 I stuck GZRs in after the original pickup failed and it's also on the light side. I like the bright sunburst on the OP's bass.

Thanks - I have a set of GZRs in an Allparts P Bass I put together recently, love those pickups.

That is random, isn't it? It isn't in my way so I will probably just leave it, but I won't use it. Another curiosity not shown in the pics is a small section near the heel on the back of the neck where someone carved out "II20." This one definitely isn't a collector's piece...

Beauty! My '75 is the lightest full size bass I own. I've got a Fender '62 CS in it and it sounds great!! Enjoy your new toy!

What a treasure! I had a '70 Fender P-bass. I wish I still had it, but I sold cheap many years ago to a guitarist acquaintance who was wanting to learn bass but didn't have much money to spend. He turned around and pawned it. When I found out what he did, I extracted the name of the pawn shop from him by waterboarding him. The bad news is that the bass was gone when I got to that shop. The good news is that the acquaintance's body has never been found.

by the early 1970s scientists realized you can’t use a thumb bar under the strings so the previous owner knew more about human anatomy than Leo. Now it’s useable.

Yep, the pickguard is a replacement. Fortunately for me the assorted aftermarket parts and "player's grade" condition dropped the price to the point where I could afford it.
