NBD! '74 Precision, super clean black & maple!

thats awesome! Unless you want those old flats on it...looks like a bass that needs some bright rounds. great score

I installed a set of GHS Pressurewounds that I had been wanted to try. They sound like roundwounds but a little mellower sounding and smoother feeling. Not sticky like half-rounds. This bass has the strong midrange punch that I associate with P-Basses from this era. I'll probably stick with some type of roundwound since I keep La Belia flats on my other P-Bass.

I have a 74P bass. It might be the best sounding bass I own! It doesn’t sound as hi-fi as my bases with Nordstrand pick ups, rather it has pretty normal sounding lows and a bit of a mid bump. In the mix it’s absolutely brilliant! And it’s just below 9# like yours. Our guitarist tries to talk me into bringing it all the time. By constrast my American Standard P sounds very dark and deep.

New Bass Day! A friend told me there was something special at the local Sam Ash, and he wasn't kidding! This '75 Precision is in great shape with clean & bright maple neck and a nary a scratch on the black finish. Only the oxidation on the frets and tuners bely it's age. Three of the strings look like factory Fender flatwounds and the foam mute is still intact under the bridge cover! Even with this setup, it sounds great and it weighs a comfy 8.75 lbs. When they brought the case I was glad to see that it was original. In the accessory compartment was the chrome pickup cover, inspection tag, case keys (attached to a shower curtain hook), a pitch pipe, a well-worn felt pick, a screwdriver, and a homemade cable made with telephone plugs. It was obvious that this bass saw relatively little action and hadn't been played in years. That's about to change!

Wow! Beautiful bass, You a got deal on that, my first P bass was a new Sunburst bought in 1970. That bass looks better than mine did after a year:laugh:. I have not seen the foam on a Fender bass since I was 17, the day I brought my '70 home. I also had a 72 fretless P bass that was identical to that except of course for no frets and thumb rest placement.

By the time I got my '75, any of the covers were gone. I know at one point there was a cover over the bridge based on holes in the body, never spotted holes for a cover over the pickup. When did Fender stop with the chrome covers as a standard offering, assuming the covers were something that had come on most everything.
