NBD: '75 Fender Musicmaster

So I sold two basses last week, a Dean and a Warwick. Both were fixer-uppers I'd fixed up and played around with for awhile then listed. I was glad to have them move along to someone who'd enjoy them. Really liked the Warwick but I already have one. While removing my Craigslist ads, I thought I'd have a quick browse of what other basses were for sale locally. I smugly thought I'd be safe because I'd just sold two and certainly don't need more. Then this cute little beauty crossed my screen. A Musicmaster? Me? Why? I play P-basses. Heavy heavy Warwicks. You already know how the story ends; I drove over to have a look and a play. I fell in like with its primitive sound. Nothing to be done but buy it. Three days later, I can hardly walk by it without picking it up. Dammit.

Why have a cool little shorty?
For me...mine has become my "couch" bass. They're just so darn comfortable to sit and play in a casual way. I too play a big ole P. But its far more cumbersome to play in a "sittin on the couch" kinda way.
Your new old bass is one good lookin little Fender bass. I think I'd rather have it than either of the ones you sold!
Nice score. 🙂👍

Exactly. I've got it sitting next to the recliner so I can grab it whenever the mood strikes.

Gorgeous bass, congrats. Rounds or flats?
Had intended to put flats on it like I do with my other passive basses, but the rounds it has on it have this amazing 'woody' tone that I don't want to mess with. Doesn't sound like anything else I play. The folks I bought the bass from got it twenty-something years ago. Wouldn't be surprised if the strings have been there since then. No idea what strings they are.

Its funny being older because I was there, meaning 1975. About then, maybe '73 or 74, Status Quo had a string of hits and Alan Lancaster used a Mustang bass which was harder to find but I found a MusicMaster which was more common for about $150 back then.

White, no, so I spray painted it black and then put in a some time playing Quo songs in a couple of bands. It was fun, but my number 1 was a '60's EB3 which everyone used and it killed the Fender for quality and growl in the pick ups which was my primary interest, even though I didn't know what it was called back then, I just knew it was missing from Fenders in general.

Thanks for the flash back. It was a fun time back then.

I used to have one of these in black, must have weighed about 15ibs, a real boat anchor and had a tone that sounded like it was being played underwater but I still miss it and will likely get another one day.
