any decent graphics shop can take a pic of that logo, digitize it and print a thin vinyl transfer (decal) that virtually no one will know from original. there might even be something online already they can pull from. then you can do what you need to with the neck and still keep the 80's feel with the decal. i second the opinion that the body could be basswood. doesn't look good in a natural finish (IMO) but nice because pretty light. have fun deciding what to do with it. if the neck is good, that plus the tuners makes it a total score!

One more vote for cleaning it up and rocking it. That bass is way cool as is.
That's what I thought, and what I'm afraid of. I would feel like a real schmuck if I stripped it and it was crappy pine. So I'm starting to lean more toward the voice of the people, and just wet sand it back to glory and rock it. I just noticed that under bright light, it's actually a sparkly pink, not a flat pastel pink.
Great idea, actually. The art-deco "FAME" is super 80s looking.

Oh man, not yet bro! If I do sell it, I gotta add some value to it and spruce it up - do the electronics and if I hang on to it I will probably refret it with stainless steel frets super-glued in - my favorite mod. I seriously expected to use it for parts. I took it apart as soon as I got it home without even trying it. Now I'm having too much fun playing it - until I catch myself in the mirror

I know you want to keep it original but look at this with a tort guard and ashtrays. I don't even like tort, but this looks really good!
That looks wicked good. Everything except the pink is what I was planning to do with a different cheapo build I'm working on in natural finish - the tort and chrome. Earlier today I was thinking about rounding off the headstock on this thing to look more fendery, but now I'm drinking the kool-aid of keeping it original.
i have no clue what it's made of, and for me, it wouldn't matter.. load it with new electronics, and black out the hardware.. done.
Add me to the growing list of vocal supporters of the idea of keeping the color as it is!
I wouldn’t change any of the paint. Restore the electronics, get it set up and go. That thing is awesome.

But I'm picking up the drift of public opinion here. Maybe I can convince myself it's a 1950s pastel, and would look great with that pearloid pickguard. My friends will die laughing if they see me with this bass, just because it's that out of character.
Now that I've played the bass, I'm starting to respect it a little more. Maybe the "Fame" logo is gonna... live forever!

You could have it wrapped in any color / print you'd like. No repaint necessary.

Ha!, I guess so.
My point of view is, I can work a dozen hours or more restoring or modding a beautiful instrument with my own hands to play and admire and show off.. if I sell it, what do I get? Maybe $200 profit? Can't even buy a Squier with that nowadays. Here's a guitar I bought on NYC craigslist that was advertised "really sh*** guitar: $25." I refinished it, refretted it, and made this pickguard to match single coil pups. This pink guy is probably going to get a pardon from getting chopped, though.
