I hate seeing old unique stuff like this get painted normal finishes you cant buy them like this anymore sadly

NBD: 80s hair holdover

Mostly a guess, but it’s starting to sound like basswood. Fairly common in ‘80s–90s MIJ/MIK, good wood for a solid body … and a solid finish. The grain doesn’t do much for most eyes. I second the black polka dots suggestionI would like to know what lurks beneath the paint before stripping it. It's not plywood, but it's thick, lightweight, and a lighter shade than another alder body I stripped recently. I'm not finding this specific model on the google.

Well "burgundy mist" or "salmon" is being charitable toward this bass.It's a very 80s, hair-metal, Cindy Lauper kind of pink. If it's a decent piece of wood, I'm going to refinish it in a dark natural finish stain with a gloss poly.

Thanks, that's helpful. Was made in Incheon, Korea, March 1986 according to the serial number lookup. One problem is that the pink on the headstock is way faded (it's not on the body), but I can't sand it because of the logo..
Update here, I did "install a nut" and solder in a jack, and fired it up.
It does sound awesome -- I was hoping it had the DiMarzio pickups, but I guess they're not -- way punchier than two other p-basses I have. Plays great even before doing any fret dressing. Has the thinner 38mm neck at nut that I like. Looking harder to justify cannibalizing it.

Don't refinish, just rock it as is. I agree with black knobs and black strings.

Pretty easy to do with decals, I bet, so relatively easily reversible.
In hindsight, you're absolutely right. But I'm picking up the drift of public opinion here. Maybe I can convince myself it's a 1950s pastel, and would look great with that pearloid pickguard. My friends will die laughing if they see me with this bass, just because it's that out of character.
Now that I've played the bass, I'm starting to respect it a little more. Maybe the "Fame" logo is gonna... live forever!

Refinish it - back to the screaming hot pink it originally was before it faded with age.

Me too. Wouldn't be my first choice of colors, but it looks okay. You just need an Izod shirt with a popped collar and some Vuarnet sunglasses. But seriously, I'd rock it as is!
The wood kinda looks like pine to me but I’d have to see it in person. Could be basswood as well, the Japanese are well known for using it.
