Last week there were two thunderbirds with broken necks on eBay. I got the silverburst, and there was a Pro IV. The Pro would have been cool, but it would have taken a bit of work to make a neck pocket in that thing.

Thinking a MIJ rosewood P neck and a burst body , pickups TBD

I really like the MIM Classic 50s P maple neck....seems like a good fit with some vintage mojo.

The RS Guitar Works Fralin pickups seem to give a good vintage sound, but they are pricey.

I think #2 is be a Fenderbird Jazz...with the Geddy neck, it should be a bit more nimble. I think I'll try some brighter rounds (#1 has flats on it) and see if I can get a brighter sound overall. I am pretty sure I'll change out the pickups, but I don't know yet.

Very nice. I attempted to make a Fenderbird when I got a screamin' clearance deal on a lightweight mahogany T-Bird body from Warmoth. I had a maple/ebony Warmoth P neck on hand and bought a Hammon Engineering Dark Star pickup for it and Warmoth performed their first production Dark Star pickup cutout for me. My brother-in-law's cabinet making shop did a clear coat walnut tint nitro finish on it for free. It looked too cool for school and sounded great, but had the WORST ergonomics ever ... neck dive supreme ... weird playing position. It was never even close to comfortable to play for me so I eventually sold it. Warmoth's Fenderbird body design is deeply flawed. Their neck pocket doesn't go nearly deep enough into the body so it hangs on you really strangely. Too bad ... woulda been cool. If anybody wants to see pictures of it ... send me an email ... mike lull also makes an exact reverse engineered 64 tbird . i have one in a czech made nonreverse bass and it smokes. very pricey - about 300 each....
