This goes back almost seven years...
I was just a little kid, only 10 years old, and remember watching Metallica at Reading on the TV, and from then on being hooked on them. I remember describing Rob Trujillo as "a crazy gorilla stomping mad man" to my mum, which caused great hilarity, and thus begun my strive for bass.
Fast forward a couple years to when I was thirteen, I'd been playing guitar for a couple years, much to my disappointment as I'd begged my family for a bass, seen Metallica at Newcastle Arena in March '09 and was a self acclaimed metal head. I'd delved into Metallica's history, reading about Cliff and Jason and the years they spent with Metallica, but didn't really pay attention to the instruments they used, until I saw S&M. I'll always remember watching that for the first time, seeing Jason's bass and absolutely freaking at how it looked. At first glance I thought it was a Fender, but once I researched it and found out it was a Sadowsky and how much it cost, I was gutted. I thought my dreams of getting a bass that looked like Jason's was short lived, but apparently not.
From then on I carried on playing guitar, thrashing my head away for a couple years, and honing my right hand technique, but that wasn't enough. Once I'd left school and got into my college for a performance course, I realised this could be my chance to get into bass properly. I handed over an old explorer and £100 to Guitarguitar and came out with a Sterling SUB ray 4, which has served me for 50+ gigs in the past year, and I'll no doubt get one back in the future. It was an awesome bass, but something inside of me was just like, "man, this isn't it.", and I thought I wouldn't feel fulfilled in my instrument for a few years...
Until I found this.
It's a suped up Fender Mexican Jazz bass, and I'm in love with it. The dude who I bought it off has installed EMG's, a Gotoh 201 heavy cast bridge, Hipshot X tender drop D lever and a graphtech graphite nut. So it's really worth around £1000! Admittedly, the block inlays are vinyl sticker, but I was told he'd had them on for years and they hadn't peeled or scratched!
I found it on a local trading page on Facebook for £500, so I kicked my arse into gear, sold my Sterling SUB and my terrible Line 6 Spider IV, forked over the remainder of the money and voila. She's mine.
So, today, Saturday 5th of July 2014, I have fulfilled my childhood dream of getting a bass similar to Jason Newsted's. I've latched onto this dream for years and you won't believe how good it feels for it to come true.
I'm not that much of a story teller, but I hope you enjoyed my little story!
