I re-measured the neck and we have a bit of a mystery on our hands.
I had to set the tape up on a few video games to take the picture, but the nut is not 1.5" - more like 1.625"
Here's a pic with a paper ruler:

Technically, this isn't an active bass. The active circuit is more of a boost of sorts, to combat long cords.

The middle switch on these basses is a series/parallel switch. I'm going to replace that switch with a series/outer coils/parallel switch so I can get a Jazzish sound.
The other thing I'm going to do is wire the series parts of the new switch to a push/pull pot (which will be the new treble pot) to allow for the infamous OMG mode. OMG shunts bass to one coil and the result is a big, deep single-coil like sound. Pot down will be OMG and up will be regular series.
My ‘83 measures 1.67” on the machinist rule. 1 3/4 is maybe a typo from the 5 string.
Actually it's not a typo. I've owned a number of these basses and they all measured 1.75" at the nut. That was always my issue. 1.5" is too narrow for me and 1.75" is too wide - this one is perfect!
Maybe all the wiring mods are overkill, but it's nice to have options. I'll have either pickup or both in parallel, series, single and OMG.
Wow I agree that is too wide. I see now g&l has 4 nut width options for the US ones, maybe there are certain runs of different sizes in the tributes too. I really don’t like a 1 3/4 neck for a 4 string. Congrats on scoring that one! There’s nothing like finding an instrument that fits you!

I was trying to get the switch wiring done while helping my 9th grader work on a paper, so I didn't get very far.
I need to pull out the guts and give the cavity a proper copper shielding job, if nothing else but to simplify the grounding network. Three pots, three switches, five wires from each pickup and a preamp module, and you can see why there's a need to simplify the rats nest.
